got a serious problem here don't know if I post this here or not but .

I have the basic 16 g setup 550's safc 3 inch exhaust 3gm maf car was tuned by extreme I baby the car all thetime I'm not that hard on it jus the other day I was going to gett coffee abd I started hearibg a knock it was incomsistant at first then I tried startingit today and its become consistant with rpm rise and fall . you can feel it hitting smething but I can't tel if its coming from the head or the block either way . the car idels fine and goes fine right up untill you hit boost then it starts to feel like the boost holding the car back instead . I just did a head gasket change and everything looked fine .

the knoc def sounds like its coming more from the block

this is a 95 tsi awd with the 7 bolt
please help me shed some light on this thanks

That sounds a lot like rod knock, unfortunately. Have you had any oiling problems with the engine lately?

The headgasket change you did my have put debis in the oiling system cleaning the deck wiping out the bearings I see it all the time. Internitent knock is a rod.

To be sure it's rod knock start the motor and rev it to the point at which the sound starts. Pull and replace one plug wire at a time and see if the sound disappears. If it does, it's likely rod knock since the load is being taken off of that particular piston. Keep in mind that a bad case of rod knock will come on at idle.

Post back and let us know what you find.

ill be honest im still a little new to everything , i did all my own work and my own head gasket but i am learning ... the knock is very apearent right at idel , i will go and try to remove the plugs if i take the plugs out wont they gap to me ..and wont that hurt like helll......LOL

one more question , would rod knock be the reason that i cant hit boost , im just asking here cause i dont know ...and i just spent a crap load on this car and i want it to be on the road ...

Pull the plug wire from the coilpack when the engine is shut down, not while it is running. If you do have rod knock, you have bigger things to worry about other than your engine not being able to build boost.

Definitely rod knock. Had this happen to several cars. Time for a rebuild.

Your not able to build boost because you have 43 counts of knock all the time with out timing advance you wont build boost.

will do im off saturday so i will getting it all taken apart then ....im thinking the best thing todo would be to just find a 6 bolt motor and put that in ......and build it up right and perfect over the winter. since i have everything i already have i figuer i just need the head and block .....correct ?

i will take pics to let ya guys see whats going on ...thanks very much for helping me out , it means alot .....i almost sold it but its to pretty to sell...thanks again .....i heart :dsm: :talon: :laser: community ....

hey, I never saw you back online last night to come by and look it all over. Im getting the vibe something got in the oil during your head swap :( and now you have rod knock.

Let me know, ill come by today or this weekend... YOUR NOT SELLING THE CAR I wont let you, your going to do a 6 bolt swap in the case it is knocking.

Heres the car and the sound:

Not the greatest quality and it was really dark...attempted to hold the flash light and recored but hey it lets you hear the sound  Its definately time to get the pan off and see whats going on

That sounds very much like rod knock. Those who've had it can never forget it.

Hearing that brings back too many awful memories or needing a bottom end rebuild...

Yeah I do recall hearing that a few K$ ago...ye old 1G 7bolt itwas...132K miles on 'er.

I see a 6 bolt in your future. You are officially a DSM'r now. Especially once the 6 bolt is installed.

Don't worry, like the Phoenix from the ashes, the mighty Eagle shall rise again. (or eclipse whatever hehe) :rocks:
