i decided to do a headgasket due to it leaking oil-- im putting the car back together and need to get the timing together... i forgot to put the engine at TDC cyl 1 before taking everything apart so im guessing i would need to do that 1st--

i put red RTV on the cams and crank before i started, but since it wasnt at TDC i guess it doesnt help... so the pics are as follows--

i need to line up the marks on the cams (pink and white marks on teeth) which is about 90* clockwise on both cams.

crankshaft--my finger is pointing to a pink mark from a previous build that was already there. im guessing when i put cyl 1 at TDC the mark my finger is at will match up with the pink mark next to that bolt in the pic... even if it doesnt, as long as cyl 1 is TDC ill be good correct?

oil pump--- i held it so the arrow was facing up and it rotated C-clockwise... when i put the belt on ill make sure it lines completely up with the arrow on the case-- good?

balance belt-- i never touched this (never took off the belt or anything) so i dont know if i need to worry about this one--- im guessing when i turn the crank this will turn to any the arrow will line up with the mark on the edge of the case? if it doesnt then what?

thanx for the help guys :)

Wouldn't it have been better to replace the balance shaft belt while u have it apart? Just my .02. But I'm not sure about Urquestions either but curious.

Well I have a 6bolt I'm building and will drop in in march-- I personally didn't want to spend 500 bucks on brand new timing -everything- for this engine when I only plan on driving the car 30-50x during the winter. The belts and everything all have around 30k on them so I figured they can last a few months of light driving (new clutch so I need to break it in for 500 miles anyway) I just wanted the bare minium for this engine

I know this thread is old, but the questions need to be addressed in case someone searches for answers:

im guessing

Never guess when you're doing a timing belt job.

1. Camshaft alignment is always checked at TDC. Dowel pins pointing at or close to 12 o'clock.

2. There is a crank notch located on the front case (I believe under the crank angle sensor you still have bolted on). This needs to be in line with the crank sprocket notch at TDC. You will need to align this THIRD in the process, after the oil pump sprocket.

3. Your oil pump sprocket will naturally have to be set about a half tooth CCW, so that when you put the belt on, it should rotate CW to line both the sprocket and front case notch together. No matter what, when the belt is tight with no slack, all notches should always match at TDC.

4. bbelt notch should be at 9 o'clock matching the front case notch at TDC. Since you are not at TDC, I can't tell you if it's in phase or not.

I my self do not know the answers to your questions but I definitely would love to learn.

here's an article I wrote a while ago, it should help a lot.

Yes, replacing the BB is a no brainer $50 investment. I've seen countless bbelts torn and lodged into tbelts causing some serious failure. As with anything in car modding, do it right, do it once.

Hey, I think you might need a bit of help, just by looking at the pics... Feel free to call me tomorrow if you haven't figured it out either.

Ok first Pic - Cam gears Need to be UP, by looking at the dowl pins. - I show this in the video
Pic #2 - You are looking at the PINK DOT... Look at the Timing Flag, it has the timing mark indented on it - I show this in the the Video also,
Pic #3 - Looks a tad off, It will look straight as can be when you get the upper gears correct, and wrap it around. ALSO - you are running Balance Shafts, so open the back plug of the block, and put in the screwdriver so you know the balance shaft weighted side is now DOWN.
Pic #4 of the belt driven balance shaft, This you time first, before worrying about the rest of the timing belt. Then once this is timed in, screwdriver the pump driven shaft so you know is down, and run the belt around from there, starting with CAM GEARS - To OIL PUMP, TO CRANK, TO IDLE PULLEY.

Watch This Video Also, its pretty helpful, but I dont have the Tensioner part here, but its in every book, and you can find info easily.

Hope this help buddy!! Dont forget to turn it over with a 1/2 ratchet a bizillion time to ensure everything floats together :)

Lastly here is a link of other timing info I made a few months back, but have not added pics yet:ohdamn:

Keep it real!!

Pic #2 You have a little notch with a bolt in the upper left hand side by the crank gear (looks like it has purple on it allreadyin your pic). This is what I lined up to when I did the timing job on my 97'.

hey thanks for the replies guys! i got everything up and running the day after i posted this. was having problems getting the tension set but it all worked out in the end. some good info in this thread now too :)
