what do they do anyhow, main question. I am having problems with stumbling on acceleration etc. and people said it could be leaking vaccum lines, but my question is, what really do they do?

THanks :)

well i hope the mechanic that installed the spark plugs gapped em' right. On mach v the wires are like $50 something, is there any places that are cheaper or is that just the normal price??

You can pull the plugs and check the gap with a $2 tool.

Someone ripped you off. They're a buck each where I work for the disc kind. :D I guess the fancier ones go for more though. Anywho....

Plug wires will run anywhere from $35 for a set of Borg-Warner wires (at a local auto-parts store) to over $100 for Magnecore's.

As kenamond mentioned, check the gap with a gap tool, adjust if necessary, and replace old plugs and plug wires. If the car continues to stumble, either run some injector cleaner through the gas lines or perform a SeaFoam treatment. Some people have mentioned that that made their car run smoother. In most cases, though, stumbling or hesitation is usually cured by installing the correct spark plugs. Also, stay away from platinum plugs. Standard NGK's work best on our cars.

If all else fails, check your vacuum lines for leaks, cracks, or otherwise deteriorating rubber. The lines nearest the engine usually get heated up and harden faster than vacuum lines that aren't located as close.

The vacuum lines are for emissions. They are not worth the extra weight of the lines (miniscule) and equipment themselves (charcoal, egr, etc...), IMHO. This and/or this should point you in the right direction for removing them all (assuming you have a 1g). :thumb:

Stumbling could be a number of things: boost leak, vacuum line(s) torn or broken, ignition related (coil pack, spark plugs and/or wires, transistor, shorted/broken wires,...), stuck/plugged fuel components [fuel filter, injector(s), fuel pump screen,...]...

I need more information on the stumbling to create a proper internet diagnosis. :D

I hope some of this helps...

well I just seafoam'ed. sucked around 3/4 can into the "throttle body" I guess, thru one of the vaccum lines, and put 1/4th in the gas tank. but i was almost out of gas anyhow sooo i will just run that until my gas runs out I guess. Really tho i barly put any in the gas tank i may get another bottle and put all of it in the tank when I get a refill. Really there wasnt much smoke at all. Barely any? hrmm. I do think there was a quicker throttle response after the seafoam'ing. I dunno tho... that stumbling still sorta is there. i will have to see about seafoaming the gas tank and mabe the oil and we will go from there. I am due for a oil change in athousand miles I beleive, sooo. I really do need to replace my lower radiator hose, it looks rreeeealy bad. I think its the stock one.
