So im buying a 91 gsx non running for 400 and doing my first rebuild on it. I want to do a 2.3 stroker kit in it..but don't want to spend 1800 on a new one..would it be a good idea to buy a used one?

Doing a strocker build, or any build for that matter can get real expensive. Im 19 and spent over 1500 at least on parts so far. I dont see why buying a used one will hurt. But just dont cheap out. Make sure you do the research before any purchase.

I would set a power goal first, that will help determine how you spend on your build if you are budgeting.

A stroker set up consists of 100mm crank, rods (that are stock length), and stoker pistons. If you are looking to save a few dollars and you power goal will allow for it, recondition your stock 6 bolt rods and use those.

goodluck

Sorry I do actually have a power goal I didn't post it..I'm looking to get around 350-375 whp with the big 16g

So your saying if the stock rods still look good then just re-use them? How much power can they safley hold?

That is completely feasible goal. In fact that can be obtained without the stroker set up, but I understand that 2.3l set up for a street driven car.

as far as the rods:

As you can see form those three links, there is not magic number they can hold, but have been proven to be able to support 375+ hp. I would not reuse the rods in the car, unless they look perfect. I would have them sent to a machine shop, many of our supporting vendors can do this, and have the rods reconditioned.
