Upgrading to DSMlink...is there any use for this SAFC now?

This may sound stupid, but I like the light show. :coy: Is there any reason to keep the SAFC hooked up and zeroed while DSMlink is handling all ecu management? I was thinking it might be useful just for monitoring engine parameters. Which, incidentally, is probably all that piece of shit has been good for in hindsight. Should I remove it or keep it? I don't think I can get much on ebay for it anyway. Not to mention I had someone install it and don't relish removing it and messing something up in the process...

As long as the SAFC is zeroed out, there should not be an issue, although I've not done it. As a matter of fact they recommend that you leave your old tuning device hooked up (and zeroed out) until you get the hang of DSMLink in case a problem arises.

However, with DSMLink up and running, there is absolutely no reason to keep it. DSMLink will handle your tuning needs, plus it comes with a logger that's second to none.

just cut the wires nearest the wiring harness and tape it up you be fine, but both together you can watch parameters and with it 0ed out, but with dsmlink you can just use that safc to poke something with a stick.

I understand that, but DSMlink requires your laptop connected to view parameters. I know you can use a logger with it using Landry's program, but my palm died and I'll never use those antiquated turds ever again. With the AFC I can keep 4 parameters displayed. I like to be able to view things like my battery voltage, karman, throttle position, etc.

So it sounds like the safc has no use but as a display. I guess I have to decide if it is worth selling or not in order to justify removal. They aren't worth much on the market. I just had to ask because I've never heard of anyone having DSMlink and AFC still in the car.

Beating4G63, I don't want to cut the harness. If I remove it I need to sell it to some unfortunate soul.

This is wrong. For most the wires it is ok but not for the airflow wire. When you install the SAFC you cut the airflow wire to the ecu, feed it into the SAFC and then the output airflow wire from the SAFC feeds into the ECU. This is how it 'tunes', it modifies the airflow signal going into the ECU. If you just cut the wires and tape them like mentioned above you will have no airflow signal going to the ECU.

Sell it, use the money for another mod.

Rice Over Wheat since you are in Orlando, come over to my house and I will uninstall it for you. I am pretty sure you can get at least 150 for it, 100 at the minimum.

Sell the SAFC, you don't need your laptop or palm pilot in your car. Only to dial your setting in... I havn't had my laptop in my car for like 4 months. Leaving your Safc in will do more harm then good.

Ok you guys convinced me, I'm going to remove it. Maybe selling it will recover some of the $ I'm spending on a water injection kit.

2GAWDTalon, alright I'll do that, thanks for the offer. I just bought the ecu from the classifieds so I won't be installing dsmlink for about 2 weeks, but I'll contact you then. What do you drink? I'll buy you a case of beer or something for helping me out. And thanks for the heads up on the airflow wire.

he's right about the airflow signal, it is intercepted to be modified (comes from sensor to afc, it is modified by afc and then goes back to ecu). This used to be my car, one time thieves stole my afc and I had to rewire back to stock... it didn't look too pretty down there before, I hope the person that wired this AFC did a good job. I am pretty sure I soddered the wires back on, so you have nothing to worry about, no monkey wiring installation from my part. :)

I can't wait until I receive my dsmlink. My logger died after 1 month and cannot even be hard reset. I will never use one again.

I will be removing my SAFC just as soon as I have DSMLink up and running.

That wire I have to reconnect.. Is it obvious which one it is?

Average price for SAFC2s I've seen are $125-150. Damn the old SAFCs must be dipping <$100.

I wouldve been nice to keep my SAFC. It did look flashy, but keeping it would just be that. A $300 electronic device that looked cool. Unless you plan on putting it on a spare car, or just have money to waste.. sell it. Looks like all us dsmlink converts have. :)

I know, I should pull mine out ASAP and sell it before the price dips anymore.

When I first decided to get DSMLink (18 months ago) the price for used SAFCII was $ 180.00 and up. (I had figured I'd recoop 35% of the DSMLink cost - Ya right)

And thanks 2gAWDTalon for the link, (I know I should have done my own searching, but you are now part to blame for my laziness - LOL)

SAFC2's on ebay still fetching 180+, a couple over 200.

Btw, I installed dsmlink today and pulled my safc2 out. Just wanted to say WOW WHAT A DIFFERENCE!! Car behaves like stock now (especially since I put in new isc and blocked/removed the egr), it even sounds better, and it performs sooo much better I can't believe it, and this on the base maps from DSMlink! Best $800 I ever spent. AFC is garbage compared to this.

We need to tune your car now, there is so much to be gained over the zeroed out timing and fuel sliders...

I experienced the same thing. Anyone still running an AFC should really start saving up.

:shhh: I still need to sell my SAFC to some hapless individual. Maybe some honda toon-ers. :D

Btw, I put in my dual m3 coolingmist kit saturday, so I think the two in conjunction have really led to some great gains. Check the sweet syrup headed to my intake! (Ignore the elec tape on the pump, as I forgot to take it off...it's holding the boost switch on where I epoxied it):

Definately. And I can't wait to get those 272s in. I never thought this (little) Big T28 would pull like it does. Not sure I want to see what your 50trim feels like though as that may ruin my new impression of acceleration. ;)
