is it normal for my turbo not to spool when my car is in park/neutral (auto trans) It spools fine when driving, but not when im in neutral or park. If it is normal is there a way to make it spool?

Normally you won't build boost in neutral. Under certain circumstances you may see a flash of boost right at before redline, but this is not common.

And you may consider not getting into pissing contests with other cars, it's a good way to lose yours.

Only time they need to know you have a turbo is when they see your tail lights turning off the track to drive back to the start of the strip.

Cause they will walk up to you and ask to see what's under your hood. :p

Also: Turbos operate under load conditions. The waste gate and bypass valve have to be closed in order to build boost. And since they are vaccuum and pressure driven, when you're in park or neutral, there's no load on the engine. nothing for it to push against.

Put it in gear, apply heavy brakes, and give it throttle. That will get it to spool while standing still. But I dont recommend this on streets or any public area other than the track. Besides, you have nothing to porve to s shitty focus.

There was some guy in a crappy focus reving his engine the other day when i was picking up my girlfriend from school and he had a turbo whistle bolted onto his exaust pipe. I want to show them what a real turbo sounds likeLOL
I dont think you could do that with a 13G.

You should have just stood there and :tease: at him for even having a "turbo whistle" on his tailpipe

Exactly. Any person dumb enough to put one of them on his car probably wouldn't know if they were hearing a real one anyway.

my turbo spools at about 5.5k-6.5k And you can hear it blow off in neutral..

Tim In your auto you can get it to spool a little bit but that's only if the rev the shit out of it..Like to about 7k and let off the gas..This I would not reccomend..Especially it your just trying to show off..

But also, like widow said you have nothing to prove to a focus, unless its an svt..Chances are its a shitty focus with an exhuast and an intake pipe..You don't need to worry about him at all..

Technically, the turbo does spool (or spin) at idle, at least with factory and smaller turbos. Larger turbo's may not spin, or as quick, because they require more exhaust flow which the engine may not provide. at idle

If you had a clear intake pipe you would see the turbine accelerating as you rev the motor to a higher rpm. However, there's not enough positive pressure (load) to boost due to lack of exhaust mass flow rate.

it is possible to spool but it takes more than rpms to do so like said before you have to "load" the turbo to make it spool it takes whats called "cfm's" (Cubic Feet per Minute of pressureized air flow) to make it happen not just psi and each turbo is different and takes a different amount of cfm's. hope this helped.:hellyeah:

I know a honda hatch that you can hear the turbo spinning at idle, but he's pushing something like 700 plus hp out of a 1.9l, and is only running 12psi or something on some ungodly big turbo. His professed trick is the super-trick skunk2 head, it flows like crazy.

Well that probably wouldn't be a good idea considering he owns an AWD TSI.

I also strongly agree with everyone else, you don't need to waste your time on a Focus, that the equivalent of some kid trying to show off in a Civic, even Type R's don't compete with TSI's, sometimes not even the ESI's, but that's more driver skill than specs. At least in my experience.

Shouldn't make a difference, it's just brake boosting.

Not to mention your torque converter will hate you. All that energy in a loaded engine has to go somewhere...
