Turbo took a massive Sh** on me.

yeah....getting onto the interstate getting up too speed @ 6000 rpm @ ??? boost (wasnt paying attention to boost gauge I fear I overboosted...) when I completely lost boost and power...I went umm shit.....and looked behind me and all i saw was a massive cloud of smoke.... first thought obviously...motor is ####ed...but the car was still running fine and on all 4 cylinders....so rings going to hell or spinning a bearing or throwing a rod are all out of the question...next thought was headgasket...pulled over....at idle the car stopped smoking completely....checked oil it was good...no water in it and no foam on oil cap so....my turbo had to of taken a shit i thought..got back in...tried to accel....no boost...turbo isnt spooling...so definet yes on turbo going BOOM!


so now I'm in need of a new one...

MOney is tight and I cant not have a car....I have a Spare 14B that is just the housings and such...could I simply just put the turbine (if it is still good) in it and call it a day till I can get a new turbo?

or should I just look for a used 14b? until I can get a new turbo


or should I just suck it up and buy a 16G? if so my next question is what do I need to install it? I know its TDO5H...but do I need anything besides the turbo itself? like Coolant or Oil lines (Ive got a 1990 Laser RS TUrbo) (STOCK injectors on 255 Walbro FYI)

please fellow dsm-ers give me some guidence!
 
couple route to go get a good cartridge center section of the turbo or get a good used 14. or spend the cash and upgrade the 16g should just bolt right on with no mods only 2g guys have to change the lines and stuff
 
well the 14b uses the same install kit as the 16g, so you should be good. I would buy the 16g because it will save you money in the long run. Instead of dishing out money for a temp fix and then possibly getting a 16g anyway. It took me awhile to figure that out, and now I'm selling all my old stuff and not getting close to what I payed for it.:ohdamn:
 
If the turbine aka turbine shaft is fine without issues then you can swap it into the good housing. You WILL need to get it balanced if you put any new wheels on though and that the lock nut will be out of balance too.

Search the classifieds to see if you can find either a cheap 14b or a 16g and you will not need to change anything to bolt the 16g up on a 1g.

If I'm using all the same internal parts from the same turbo why would they need rebalanced?
 
If the wheels are undamaged, scribe the nut, shaft and compressor wheel and you won't need to. I only said you would need to get balanced if you had to get a new wheel or shaft.

However if you are saying the turbo isn't spooling and you had that bad of smoke come out then assume the worst that at least 1 wheel is toast.
 
Well...I'm working through the night...got the turbo out...i havent really inspected it yet, the turbine still spins freely with out a problem....a Tinsey bit of shaft play but it's been there for awhile...

Well I flipped the turbo over and looked into the exhaust side housing because that's where all the oil was coming from and umm.....well.....the whole exhaust turbine snapped off...its just gone....I assume its somewhere inside my downpipe...hopefully not that far in so that way I can pull it out easily...I gotta say tho....just wow...Turbo was rebuilt not even that long ago too that's the strange thing. must have been a crappy rebuild job...

at this point since I cant figure out how to get the intake side turbine blade off to get the turbo apart it seems like the best idea would be to just buy a new turbo...gonna check in the morning if my buddy Mark has one.
 
STOCK injectors on 255 Walbro FYI)
(Kinda over-riding those 450cc injectors with that large 'Wally' in the tank, don't ya think? Quite surprised that the injectors haven't blown apart with all of that extra fuel pressure...)

450cc injectors were designed with the 14B turbo-turbo spools a bit quicker than the 16G due to the smaller compressor wheel.

16G is also good, but works a lot better with larger injectors and a good engine management setup.

when you get your pockets lined with green again, oughta think of these slight mods to take advantage of the large 'Wally' and the 16G turbo.

You are extremly lucky that the compressor didn't explode as well with all the travel it should be capable of.

The housings may still be useable you'll just need to remove the turbine housing to see how much you have to work with. You may just need to cut or grind the rest of the blades off to pull the shaft out with the compressor on. That's if you are even bothering trying to get it apart.

At least get some pictures up of the damage. With and without the turbine housing.
 
That happened to my 14b too, ran open dp and poof oil everywhere clouds of smoke a knick on my o2 sensor and no turbine wheel to be found....

and yeah The 255 walbro is a little much I agree but i got it in the car when I bought it so not much I can do about it till I get bigger injectors and such.

My buddy mark ended up letting me have a spare 14B he had laying around for 40$. not bad deal IMO. I showed him the old turbo and what had happend and he had never seen anything like it...and he's seen ALOT of blown turbos LOL.

I will post pics soon....I found my turbine in the bottom of my down pipe, I had to take downpipe off completely to get it out. in the pictures you will see it got chewed up to hell and where it snapped the shaft off on it. I don't think there is a single blade on the turbine that isn't shatterd or at least severly bent. My old turbo also has a good size crack from when the turbine blew up I'm assuming.


to give you an idea of how thick the smoke was...it looked like I was seafoaming my car constantly while driving except times 10. I was driving at night and I couldn't see the people's headlights behind me the smoke was so thick.

I said theres a few large cracks in the turbo's housing. It's non rebuildable with out getting a new housing, and why would I waste my time rebuilding a 14B when I have a perfectly good one on my car, and I could just upgrade to a 16G for probably the same price?
