Turbo problems

Ok i just put in a rebuilt 16g turbo on my car that i built myself and had a machine shop make the bushings (bearings). when i got it back it had very minimal shaft play(back and forth not in and out). i put it in and there are no leaks. but my problem is that it howls pretty loud at about 1lb of boost and i only get a max of 8lbs of boost as to where my stock turbo got 13lbs but it takes me till about 4k rpms before i hit 5lbs of boost. The howling gets worse the more boost i get and the wastegate is not opening very much which makes me think it has a 15lb spring in it. so why does it take so long to spool, why is it howling, and why is it only creating 8lbs of boost???? my friend told me its the bearings they were not made right...could that be the problem?

that could be a problem...you should just take it to a shop that just deals with rebuilding turbos...just pay a lil extra to save you the peace of mind

i would but i would rather try and fix it by myself just for more experience on turbos and there isnt a shop near me that specializes in turbo rebuilds or anything anyway.

check the blades of the compressor side....could be the blades spinning against the compressor housing

Journal bearings are literally less than $20/set. Why anyone would go through the work to make them and risk killing the turbo is beyond imagination.

Did you even get a rebuild kit to replace the internals? Guessing not...

yes i bought a rebuild kit with all new seals and bearings but the guy that i got them from sent me the wrong bearings so i had to get some made from a machine shop. i took them the turbo and had them make the bearings. and the reason i didnt order another set of bearings was because the right bearings were to big for the shaft because the shaft has been worn down a little so no i cant order another set of bearings either, i have to have them custome made.

Right, because it's not like there are journal bearings made in oversize and undersize specs for just such an occurrance.

Do you have your engine bearings custom-made if the crank journals are a little worn, too?
