Hey guys, I have a 1997 Spyder N/A. I wanted to get some opinions about what I should/can do. I know its possible to turbo the 4g64 engine but is it worth it for me since mine has about 135k miles on it and would need a complete rebuild. I don't want a rediculous amount of power, maybe something in the 300 range. I can purchase a 4g63t for about $1,200. What do you guys think about what engine and turbo I should plan on getting.

Note: I'm a muscle car guy so this whole turbo experience is new to me :D

i realize that as an option but I'd rather just keep the car because I've done the work to it to make sure its reliable and I dont want to do it again if not ness. plus I like having the convertible since its a summer car only

if im not mistaken the Spyder does not have a 420a in it. its a 2.4L 4g64. in fact, the OP stated he has the 4g64, not a 420a if i'm not mistaken.

Yes I have the 4g64 like all N/A spyders have. It does seem to get pricey and I know I'm looking at spending a few bucks but I'd like to find the cheapest and easiest way to get her turbo'd.

i would probably try and sell/trade the fwd, and try and get a 95 gsx :) just my opinion but i dont see much point in spending thousands of dollars in a fwd

Yes thats a VERY helpful page, explains everything in detail...so is that the better way than dropping a 4g63 in?

I'm not really concerned about AWD nor do I care if I have it. I'm not looking for a real street machine just slightly more gutsy than the stock 4g64 would be nice. I have a 72 Trans Am as my toy, this is my daily driver...

also...what kind of boost would i be able to run with the 4g64 on stock internals?

No more than 10 pounds i would say to be safe. That motor has high compression, combined with a turbo, ouch. I have a friend that did it, and he runs 10 psi, with a b16g. His car runs very strong. Pulls very nicely.

does it require any fab. or alot of work swapping a 4g63T into a non turbo car? If not I think I'll just buy a 4g63t, work on it outside of the car and still have the car run during the work and do the work I really want to do on it instead of rushing and getting a car I'm not satisfied with...

You can do it, but with a ton of fabrication, mainly the mounting points where the engine and tranny sit, are totally backwards. You would need a new exhaust, tranny, engine, motor mounts, axles. Not something you want to do. Read some articles about swapping a turbo into a 420a.

yea i read some of the articles but i was unsure of the diff. in 420a and 4g64. I suppose that wouldn't be worth the trouble at all...
