Turbo noise?? Sounds like a siren. Only happens maybe 5% of the time. When it happens I can only boost 3psi. Lasts 10-30 seconds at a time, only under boost. Turbo is a 14b with side to side and in and out shaft play. There is no smoke. It is burning a little bit of oil.

The other 95% of the time it boosts strong and hard. I hear it spool and blow off (recirculated). Boosts 12psi with the MBC all the way out. I've done many boost leak tests and have fixed all but a small leak, on the IM gasket best I can figure, maybe the TB shaft seals. At first I couldn't even get it to hold 3psi, now it will hold up to 15psi.

I've already ordered another 14b with no shaft play to see if it fixes the problem but I wanted y'alls opinion on the noise. Here it is:

<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/nbfRVXD53ek&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/nbfRVXD53ek&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

Thanks!

I think it's saying "KILL ME NOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW"

There's your problem right there. Your turbo is blown. The wheels are hitting the inside of the housing. Just take a peek.

It's just not smoking yet because the play hasn't eaten through the oil seals yet.

I think thats what it is too, that's why I've already purchased another 14b. However it only does it sometimes and there are NO metal, grating, or scrapping sounds that would be associated with the wheel hitting the housing.

More than likely it's the drag on the compressor housing as the wheel eats its way through it.

I'm just waiting for him to post a picture like this.

That's my old T25. It made some funny sounds as it died.

Check this out. The turbo had been sitting for 5 years. I check it while its off of the car and it has side to side and in and out shaft play. It's been on the car for just over 1,000 miles now at 11-12 psi. I just checked for shaft play with it mounted on the car and it barely moves side to side and ZERO in and out. Does that make any sense?

If it has ANY in and out at ANY point in time, that's thrust failure, and the turbo needs to come off the car.

edit* take off the compressor housing and check the top of the exducers and the machined area of the comp housing.

mmm thats weird cause mine has had in and out play and side to side too... it was like that when i first got the car... and its still going strong... no problems at all at 17psi all day every day...!!! i guess every turbo is different.!!!! oh also its a EVO3 16G

Absolutely. The journals and thrust plate of a turbo that sat off the car for five years have absolutely no oil on them. There's always an oil tolerance for the journal bearings (up/down movement), but the thrust plate should not have wear at any point (in/out movement). If there is thrust movement the turbo should be rebuilt right away as it will only get worse rapidly.

It needs rebuilt. By waiting and leaving it on the car, you're only risking much greater failure by the shaft play eventually being bad enough to cause wheel damage.

Last photo, blade near 4 o'clock position.
Yep. There it is. Knew you'd post a picture like mine at some point. Look at the tips of the inducer blades. Notice that small burr that's forming? You're hitting the inside of the compressor housing. Time for a rebuild (and wheel replacement).

Well I pulled it off today and now that its off the shaft play is evident again. I bought another 14b off the classifieds last week and the guy said that he shipped it last Friday so I should receive it any day now (I'm hoping today). I've got exactly 1 week to get everything back together for the Texas Mitsubishi Shootout in San Antonio.

I got the "new" 14b on today. So far so good. With my old 14b I was getting 12 psi with the MBC all the way out. Now with the new one its boosting 14 psi and creeping to 17ish, still with the MBC all the way out.

So far no siren noise but I didn't drive it that far. I should know for sure after tomorrow. It definitely feels good. In first gear it starts spinning at about 4500 rpms without launching. Speaking of launching I really need to find my sweet spot before the Shootout on Sunday. This will be my first time ever on the track with a turbo.
