Turbo Despooling Shuddering Noise

Just bought a 92 tsi fwd and when the turbo despools it has a shuddering noise in rapid spurts. Many people say its the turbo having major shaft play and thats why its not a smooth wind down. I also have a turboXs bov could that be whats causing it? i took the intake tube off and the turbo has shaft play, but very minimal and doesnt feel like anything to be worried about. Is this noise normal or could i have another problem?

It could be BOV flutter. If the BOV has an adjustment screw try loosening it so that there is less preload on the spring and see if that solves or at least reduces the problem.

It looks like you are still on the stock turbo so I doubt that it is compressor surge.

Has to be. I don't think you can recirculate the Real F*ckin' Leaky ricer valve.

My guess would be flutter caused by a combination of a valve with too stiff of a spring and running too little boost pressure. You really should stick with a valve that is designed for your car (1G BOV, Forge BOV) and recirculate it. The factory 1G blow off valve has a quick release system that all but eliminates flutter and compressor surge when it opens under low boost. The Dodge Garage Mod bypasses this quick-release feature, allowing the valve to hold more boost overall- however, this is a bad idea for guys with near-stock cars running near-stock boost levels.


I wish everyone that bolts an aftermarket blow off valve on their car really knew the problems they cause.

I agree. But then again, we do have some "creative" people who might try to recirculate it

o. well this is all news to me. so stock bov and recirculate. got it. this stuffs all new to me and this bov was on there when i bought this thing, and ya its the stock turbo @ stock boost for now. thanks for the info!
