I know this has been asked by a million people about a billion different times... but I just want this for my own clarification. I was talking to a friend and we were talking cars and whatnot. We got on the topic of turbo-ing my 1g (N/A).

I thought that in order to turbo the car, I would need the ECU from a GST/GSX and a few other engine mods to essentially make the 4g63 a 4g63t (different pistons, I believe one of the cams is different...etc.)

He seems to think I can just slap on a small turbo and the stock ECU will take care of it. "o2 sensor will tell the ecu how to run - no ecu needed".

Thoughts?

He is wrong. Use the advise in your search results. It isn't just "plug-n-play"

your going to need the turbo ecu, or some other tuning device, to run the larger fuel injectors from the turbo model. you dont "need" the internals, but your boost is going to be severely limited with n/a pistons, and they are not going to last forever before they give out.

I have a friend that converted his 91 talon na to a turbo, this was about 9 years ago. I needed a 6 bolt engine for my 97 gsx and 6 bolts were hard to fine for a good price so I ended up buying a wrecked 92 tsi. I took the motor out of it and he ended up keeping all the turbo stuff, manifold, turbo, o2 housing, injectors with rail and regulator, injector resistor box, intercooler and piping, turbo fuel pump, turbo MAF, knock sensor and ecu. Anyways he ended up bolting all this on his car since its a direct bolt on to a 4g63 na motor. I think the only special wiring he had to do is wire in the knock sensor to the new ecu since the na car didn't have one and run another wire from the new MAF to the ecu since there are 7 wire in the turbo MAF vs 6 on a none turbo MAF. I don't remember now if he ended up using a stock boost controller solenoid or a mbc. If you chose to use a stock solenoid you will need to wire that in to the ecu as well or you can use a mbc but that might throw a CEL since the ecu will not see that solenoid being there.
Back then he wasn't much of a mechanic but with enough homework and persistence he got it running and it ran good. He had that car for years after that and it ran with no issues.

If I'm missing something here feel free to chime in and help me out.

Thanks everyone. Thats exactly what I was looking for. I'm going to stick to my original plan and save up for a 4g63t crate and a turbo ecu with DSMlink. Also... sidenote... I was looking up stuff about ecu's. Whats eprom?

my cars on it's way here right now, it's a 96 eclipse GS, 420a with a turbo installed. they guy i'm getting the car from, got it already done, and running, he blew the motor, got a new one put in, now when it starts it idles to redline quickly. i already ordered an intake mani gasket set, and a throttle body gasket i'll have in tomorow,
i need thsi car for school, i'll get by a few days without it, but where should i start looking assuming my gaskets and throttle body arn't my issue, i don't think a throttle position sensor would do this.
maybe cover a little on tuning if you could, i don't know much about the car, but at one point it ran so i'm assuming there's gotta be some sort of megasquirt computer or somthing, these can't be run with a turbo with out a computer add on right?

any help would be appreciated, i wanna run uber low boost, cause i want this car to last, i need to drive 4 miles a day, at best, maybe when i get outa college, i'll invest my life into a 2JZ swap, but ofr now, i need this to work

(please no arguing with each other, i see that a lot on forums, it doesn't help me put my car on the road) - thanks guys
also if i did this post wrong, i'm sorry, this sight isn't exactly "user friendly"

To easily find a vacuum leak you can build a boost leak tester and pressurize the intake manifold. I would install it on the throttle body and pressurize it. I do this a lot on n/a vehicles when i assume a there is a vacuum leak, and it works well.

Totally off topic, but I just saw you are now a wiseman. Maybe you have been for awhile, but I swear I was on here on my phone earlier and you werent LOL. If Im right and you just got it congrats LOL.

so how do i go about building a boost leak tester? duct tape, straw, and lung power haha?

It's relatively simple. Most of the parts can be bought at any hardware store for a little less than 20 bucks. You will need to go to an auto parts store to get the valve stem. I prefer to use the type with a nut that holds it in, some use a standard valve stem. 2G Turbo DSM Boost Leaks -How to test and fix

Here's one result that Google gave.

For the record and knowledge expansion : What's EPROM?

Certain ECU's our vehicles possess ECU's with EEPROM (Not to be confused with EPROM) chips that allow information to be written to and altered from. This is very handy as it allows us to flash, view, edit, or replace the chip all together for a more powerful one (See ECMtuning.com) for our performance needs. :)
