which is a better turbo?

The 62-1 Performance Turbocharger
The 62-1 represents TURBONETICS’ efforts to produce a premium turbocharger for the engine builder looking for that extra “edge” of power. Based on hand selected compressor components precisely contoured on computer controlled machining centers, the 62-1 delivers an honest 10% greater airflow than the standard 60-1. The 62-1 is not for every one, but if you can handle its potential, the expense will be well worth it.

vs.

20g
For the ultimate in Eclipse performance, look no further than our Race Turbo Upgrade. The Racing Turbo uses a huge 20G Mitsubishi turbocharger with a 7cm housing, and it’s good for up to 525 horsepower! We suggest the addition of an external wastegate and upgraded fuel system (pump, injectors) when installing the Race Turbo

As far as I remember the rules say not to do what your doing. You really should look around some and read all the other threads. Those 2 turbochargers are drastically different but are both edging towards the larger size. Its like comparing a bowling ball to an orange.

Search for things like 50 trim, green, red, 60-1, 56 trim and what not and just read. You'll see a lot of arguments for every turbo imaginable.

Before you change anything on the car you should have a very strong understanding of the car and what your doing to it. Otherwise your just screwing yourself.

You live in socal so theres no shortage of DSMers, check out sddsm.org theres a lot of smart guys down your area. And maybe you'll make some friends while your at it, I know I have :thumb:

ultimately i am looking to make 400whp and at least be a low 12 sec street car. The reason I am comparing the two is because I have a chance to get either at the same price. When you say its like comparing an orange to a bowling ball.. whos the orange? LOL.
Thanks for the advice, but i just need a little more info on the turbo's to make a final decision

62-1 will make much more power as it's a 60lb/hr wheel. The 20G will probablly be a better choice for low 12's however as pretty well any 60-series turbo has a significant amount of lag over a 20G turbo, That lag isn't offset by extra power because you only want to make 400hp which either turbo will do.

A 20g is also a bolt on upgrade for your car where a 62-1 depending on the model is a T3 or T4 exhaust housing, either way you need to change your manifold.

uh yes.

search for 20g or 62-1 and read what comes up. perhaps then youll start to understand the difference.

Sounds like your just takeing quotes from some part dealers to me. So dont post stupid threads like this and do some research.

LEARN how to read a compressor map, LEARN how much boost each turbo can push untill it starts to become unefficent, LEARN how many CFM that is at that limit, and LEARN which one is going to have the hoter intake temps, remember just because one turbo is flowing more CFM does not mean the mass of that air is as dence. So in all actuality. Turbo A could be flowing say 750cfm while turbo B is flowing 820 CFM but turbo A will make more power because the intake temps are much cooler.

Also both thoughs turbos well one anyway is VERY large, and a 20G is no small turbo for someone like you. You SERIOUSLY need to learn about what supporting mods you will need for these turbos, you can't just jump into the DSM world and bolt on a biger turbo unless you like HUGE amounts of lag, less power and blowing up your engine. If you do like thoughs things then by all means enjoy.

And just so you know the 62-1 is basicly a drag only turbo... not very streetable... Although im sure it COULD be setup to be alot more streetable... doing the stuff you would have to do to incress spool time would decress overall flower and kill the extra HP you would gain by useing that turbo.

currently reading the forums.. no need to bash.. and yes i am also going to get supporting mods. no i am not just jumping into the dsm world. yes i do have questions. and yes i am reading around in the forums to find things out. thank for the info.

i am trying to look for a good drag setup on a 2g. and i just wanted to get opinions on the two turbos and not so much a rip on how i have no clue of whats going on :thumbdown.

otherwise ripperxx your info was very useful

we're not really here to bash man. you just posted a x-turbo vs. x-turbo thread, which is annoying to help with for the most part. the only thing that started the bashing was that, youre comparing two turbos that arent even close enough to really compare. like one guy said, bowling balls to oranges.

good day.

yea i had no clue on the turbos. i mean i know i am probably doing an overkill for the simple goal of 12's with over 400hp. Never knew turbo x vs. turbo y was annoying. After a lot of searching i see what you guys mean. anymore more threads to point me to would be great guys. thanks again.

400hp? Have you ever driven a 250hp or 300hp DSM. With most of the bolt ons the stock turbo barely brakes into the low 200s. With a 16g your going to be hard pressed to break 300.

I have a 50trim, fmic, 660s and all that other crap and I'm getting 310 or so. I still need porting, cams and an intake manifold. And the about 250-270 I was getting out of the 16g was pretty freaky as it was. The 50 trim throws 4th gear out to 130mph like its nothing, I can't wait for cams.

My point is to think about what you really want, I only ever really drive mine on friday or saterday anymore. Sure the car is streetable but its just a pain to drive everyday.

And if your still deadset on it and can afford to do it you need to think about how well your going to be able to tune the car. My tune on mine is decent but its nowhere near the edge. If you edge tune and boost the hell out of the 20g it'll make 400hp. I know if I had a 20g though that I'd never get there, I'll probably end up running a 60-1 or GT35R to get to where I want to go. And I'm pretty much going for the same power level you are.

stock turbo makes low 200's from the factory, its possible to do about 250 out of it.

a 16g should do more than 300hp with no problem.

you have serious issues with your 50 trim setup. perhaps you should get the tuning close to good prior to buying cams. maybe the factory accidently put 6:1 compression pistons in your car *shrugs*:p

20g should make 400 just as easily as a 16g should make 300. wait, did i just say 400 and easy in the same sentence...im losing it.

Issues? :D Yea theres a few but I'll tell you a little more so you know I'm not a monkey. I have...

150psi across all 4 cylinders, 112,000 miles on the car. .95 o2 voltage throughout the power band. Sparkplugs gapped at .028, new coil and magnecore wires, ngk brp7es plugs.

Thats about as well as I can safely tune the AFC, yes I know I can go as low as .92 but I like to be modest about everything I do with the car.... I'm all about longevity of the motor.

Be realistic, larry d had to turn it up to like 24psi to get 230ish out of the t25...are you seriously going to run that on the street? Maybe if your talking crank HP but im talkign about the tires because thats all we can really measure without guessing.

The numbers I'm talking about are at reliable and realistic boost for 91octane. I run between 16-20psi depending on the day and how ### my internal gate is feeling.

I made 286hp at 16psi on the 50trim. I probably would have made 320 to 340 with 20-22psi. But again my internal gate was majorly screwing me on the dyno that day. Which wouldnt have been bad numbers with an unported manifold, o2housing and stock cams right?

I'm just talking realistic, I want mramc3 to understand that running average boost on average gas has a pretty big chance of not making the 400 he wants.

yea i had a sm 16g ported and clipped and never got a chance to tune it. i ran 9.1's with a 1.9 60 ft. no tuning and still learning to launch. with all this research, my goals are changing.

be aware that i am not just going to buy a turbo and slap it on. unfortunately i dont have the large income to buy everything at once. so, i am buying things one at a time :D right now the car is on jack stands in the garage waiting to be brought back to life.

91? i never ran anything less then 93, and i had low boost set at 22psi and high boost set at 24psi on my TD06h 20g. After a while i just left my EVC 5 in high boost.

you ever get it dynoed at 24 psi? I was thinking about a 20g at 24 psi for my daily driving boost level. I want about 400 whp or so ....

not saying the 20g is a bad turbo but the 50trim wheel from garret will walk all over a 20g wheel! hell i've gotten over 450awhp out of my 50trim and over 120mph traps! but who really wants to stop at 400hp! it's all about more and more power! i just switched to a 60-1 and after that comes the 56trim! go full garret! buy the kit from agp and speak to kevin!:thumb:

/\ true, but thats the turbo that came in my car when i bought it, so i decided to get its full potential out of it before i went bigger and better turbo, now im going with slowboy racings SBR GT 11.

is this on a stock 7 bolt?

didnt realize you were implying whp as you said hp, not whp.

91 octane is considered regular around here, while 94 is premium.

do you have a pocketlogger/something like that? whats wrong with your internal wastegate?

its a 38mm internal waste gate controlled by a RRE MBC, enough said :D

I need a profec and a 40mm tial if i want the kind of control im looking for.

the internal gate gets the job done in the mean time and saves a lot of money.
