just came from a engine builder and i asked about putting turbo cams in my non turbo and was told it will kill my performance by lowering my compression due to the changes in when the valve opens and when it closes -since the turbo cams hold the valve open a shade longer my compression would be lower ?............any one have any input on this theory?........please - i want to prove this guy wrong - just need to explain to him that his theory isnt true....thanks

compression wouldn't be lower, that's to due with internals of the motor and bottom end.

As far as performance, yeah you'll lose some torque and top end power. The overlap on turbo cams holds the intake open slightly longer so the boost can actually enter the cylinder and the turbo cams don't have much lift.

Turbo cars can generally benefit from swapping in an n/a cam with mild boost levels but n/a cars shouldn't use a turbo cam.

They are the same size physically. Your machinist is an idiot. Compression is a mathmatical formula of volume at BDC vs. TDC.

if you go into the non turbo 1g area - several people are saying the turbo cams are larger and help increase torque and top end?...........saying its one way of adding a few ponies ----- now im hearing completlely the opposite ?.......

If you want a definite answer try them out for yourself. Swapping cams is pretty easy if you know what you're doing. If it feels faster, then stick with them..if not then you know its no good and you can tell everyone else the results for people in the future looking into that

The are physically the same size, and will interchange, but there is definitely a lobe difference on the intake cam. The exhaust cam's are indentical.

can you feel 2- 5 hp if that at the crank from the drivers seat? Please do not take your engine to the guy who gave you the advice. the theory is correct however factory cams you will "feel" no difference.
you might experience the thought of more HP like when you change your oil for the first time, and it seems like the car is running better and faster.
