Turbo Blanket on a big 16G-yay er nay?

It may have been on this site someone said its not a good idea to put Turbo blankets on 16G's and similar because of where the oil ports are-creating the possibility of oil leaking and collecting in the blanket causing a fire.

Anyone have one on theirs or have experience with this? Just curious
 
Do they even make turbo blankets for small turbo's?

Either way its one of those things where you'll have to check it regularly to make sure theres no oil build up..

My buddy runs a blanket on his bottom mount setup and he checks for oil deposit once a month or every oil change...
 
I was thinking about running one on my car at some point in the future, but I would really like to use the new DEI titanium stuff as opposed to the old insulation-like blankets. I'm just not ready to bite the bullet on such a costly item if there are going to be major fitment issues.

Ofcourse the advertised benefit is always that it increases spool, whether theres a huge difference on a bigger or smaller turbo I have no idea.


What I'd primarily like it for is to use in conjunction with a good ol' manifold heat shield (with DEI reflective tape on the underside) like one european gentleman on here has so I don't haveto worry about melting my radiator wires and I can stick my face in under the hood without burning my facial hair off after I run it...

He also said that obiously, coolant temps were significantly lower after doing this so I'm all for it.
 
i dont see where a real benefit would come with using a blanket on a smaller turbo. just my .02

It's been proven exhaust velocity substantially increases with heat shields kept on alone.

Keep the extreme hot inside, and the cooler air out around it.

Anyway this lowers underhood temps as well which we all know is a bonus for DSMs operating temperatures.
 
It seams like a good idea to run a turbo blanket, i was actually thinking that to myself the other day, if you get one let me know if you spool better.

Hmm, I have never heard that a blanket (or wrap) would improve turbo spooling performance, especially on a stock turbo... I always understood that they were primarily for keeping in radiant heat which helps keep engine-bay temps down.... learn something every day.
 
I wouldn't worry too much about oil accumulation in a blanket. It's definitely worth checking once a month, but the chances of there ever being a problem are slim to none. How many times have any of you ever had a huge oil leak at the top of the CHRA? I know I've never had that problem. And in the event of a huge CHRA leak, it would probably not accumulate in the blanket anyway, btut here's always a slim chance, and that's the only reason people warn about it. No need to worry, but something to keep in the back of your mind anyway.

I doubt a T3 blanket would fit well on a 16g turbine housing. You may be better off buying one of the universal turbine housing wrap kits offered by Thermo-Tec or DEI.

Yeah, anytime you can keep the heat IN the system and prevent it from radiating, it will greatly improve the functionability of the system. This is also why guys use ceramic coating and thick wall sch10 tubing. Reducing engine bay temps is an awesome bonus as well.
 
What's the length on the subaru blanket. I'm looking for something to use with my BEP HX40 housing.
 
My friend had a blanket on his STi. I'll ask him if he still has it and I can mock it up on my old ebay 16g.
 
I have the DEI universal/cut to fit blanket kit on my EVO3 16G. It was kinda a pain to put on. Would be pretty simple if you are using a tubular O2 housing. The hardest part was wrapping the turbo and the o2 in the blanket. But it can be done, I have noticed a significant difference in underhood temps. As far as coolant temps I'm unsure if it helped because I changed my entire cooling system, so not sure what mods helped where.

bringing this back from the dead ... not sure if its at all really even possible but did you notice an increase in the spool on such a small turbo I am running a TD05h-20g in a 7cm housing and 16g compressor cover and external wastegate
 
Check out our Subaru Turbo Blanket, it is also used for 16G, 18G, and 20G turbos. :thumb:

I have never used a blanket but have considered it but in my opinion it's a nay. Reason I did not is because the much greater stress it puts on the metal if its something like a exhaust manifold or hot side of the turbo. Also never heard of it helping spool if so it's got to be very very minimal. I also have used heat wrap and after the mess it made and what it did to my cheap old manifold years ago, I won't no more. (cracked it everywhere immediately) I won't use it again other then downpipe wrapping. I'll stick to shields, (at any power) and they make them for stock evo3 and forced performance exhaust manifolds these days for the dsm's anyway. Might want to consider a better radiator if you don't already got one like a mishimoto 2 core paired with slim fans, that would improve cooling efficiency substantially. Thought I would share my 2 cents!
