I have a 1990 Tsi awd and i was wondering what would be the most logical route to go tuning wise. Everything is stock as of right now but once i do a turbo upgrade "Evo 3 Big 16g" and do all of my supporting mods, I was wondering what some other people have to say from having first hand experience. I know theres so many different things to choose from. Just some things I would like to know in advance.

Thanks, awdtalon11.

Everyone would say get dsmlink cause it has way more features and options than any other tuning device out here. However, if you're on a budget, an apexi safc2 will be more than enough for your 16g when you get it. It has more tuning points than the safc and is capable of handling injectors up to 680cc.

everyone would tell you and me included Go dsmlink way,you won't regret in the future, believe me.For the price you can't get better then DSMLink. But if you want to go cheaper way ,and wont go big enough then 660's cc ,then go with AFC ;)

daaamn you were fast on this :D

I burn my own eprom chips using tunerpro(free) and hex editing for the other changes.
I have full timing/fuel control as well as I run speed density.
I knew nothing about eprom/hex editing and just researched and read and learned how it worked.
There is anything you could posssibly dream of doing to your ecu in the dsmecu yahoo group.
It costed next to nothing for the socketed ecu($60) and eprom burner($90) with chips
Palm/mmcd($20 for color screen)

There are a million options, not saying this is the best, but i dont see a more capable setup for the money spent.
If i had a laptop though, i would have bought the moates ostrich($175) and had realtime editing which is definitely better than constantly changing chips

I have heard great things about DSmap, and you can run speed density. Which i dont believe they have added to V3 of ECMlink, its in the process.

DsmLink is a good product and user friendly, but i could never justifying spending the money on it to myself.
Plus I can code things that DsmLink doesn't offer:p

There is another unit where you can go speed density- Maf translator Pro ;)
MAF TRANSLATOR PRO FEATURES:

Triple Threat Tuning:
Air/Fuel Computer mode: This mode works extremely well for tuning all types of vehicles and is used to modify the airflow signal to tune the vehicle. The airflow sensor signal from the MAF or MAP sensor are tuned via the Translator Pro's sophisticated 3D mapping algorithm allowing full tunability using the front panel keypad or Windows(TM) PC using the provided software. There are 12 rpm points and 3 different load tables, all adjustable in 1/2% increments. This means more precise tuning than competitive products!

MAF Translator Mode: Llets you replace a restrictive or failing MAF system with another style or size of sensor. We have built in calibrations for popular and highly accurate GM MAF sensors up to 85mm that will now work on any car originally equipped with a MAF sensor. Reducing MAF sensor restriction by upgrading the MAF dramatically improves turbo spool time and horsepower and sensor range.

Speed Density Mode: Is the ultimate in bolt-on tuning mods! The Translator Pro performs a true speed density calculation to determine engine airflow, allowing the user to remove the MAF sensor and use a GM 3 or our 5 bar MAP sensor. Allowing tuning by RPM and boost, the Translator Pro is pre-configured with base maps for most popular applications to get the user up and running quickly, just select the base map, injector size, and go!

Thanks for posting this, its another thing i can look into. I always like having options :) does it have featuers like stutter box and antilag( i know its bad that i dont search it :nono:)

Get a chip burner or emulator and download Tunerpro. Once you get very comfortable with tuning, you can think about going speed density with dsmap, but stick to the simple method first.

You could go this route and buy a turbo upgrade for the cost of the others:thumb:
Researching on the internet and learning is pretty cheap and very useful

DsMap V2 is great! But my only issue with it is its completely rewritten code and there are some changes I cant apply that I could if it was based off of E931. I use the speed density files in the yahoo projects section. Im under the impression it was what DsMap v1 was based off of since Nick wrote it
But yeah i would definitely go with DsMap V2,before i went with DsmLink
Price being one obvious reasons, you can do a search for speed density to see its benefits
