TRE no longer selling parts??

i just read on their website they will no longer be selling parts. as of jan. 31st. uhm, anybody else know where to pick up alot of the stuff they have? like the spool or other various items?

or lets say the part numbers for the differnt gears? like the 8% taller 5th?

arg.. i was just about to buy all the parts to put together a tranny

I'm still selling some items but let me further explain why I have decided to quit sell parts with this little story....

Someone wants to buy a 2nd gear synchro from us because their transmission has been crashing 2nd gear forever, yet they haven't taken it apart know the full extent of the damage or all the other parts that they actually need to do the job correctly in the first place.

Later on they finally get their transmission apart and find that they need more parts and call me again.

We shipped more parts.

Then I receive the phone calls from the guy asking me how to put it back together because he doesn't have a shop manual and hasn't spent enough time with the transmission to complete the job.

Eventually he has it back together and in the car but now it doesn't shift that well or it breaks because the rebuild wasn't done correctly or he missed something, didn't have the gears wet-Magnafluxed, didn't check wear patterns etc.....

So guess what happens?

They go on to some forum and bi*** about how my parts suck or that I'm a jerk because I ended up getting short with them on the phone or that I didn't want to help them with the rebuild.

I only sell the parts to you guys because I would rather see you learn about the transmission for your own personal growth. The more power to those who want to try their hand at rebuilding a transmission, and if I can help with furthering some ones education or enjoyment in this field then it was worth it to sell the parts. However, it’s situations like this one that ultimately made me stop selling parts outright.

I’m at the shop 10-8pm 5 days a week. If you have technical questions about your transmission please email me [email protected] I will answer your questions usually within the hour during business hours. Please try to keep calls to a minimum because we are working on our customers transmissions and when their transmission is on my bench it receives my full attention and I’m not going to leave it to pick up the phone, so please email me instead.

I can understand exactly where you are coming from with your stopping to sell parts, however, I feel it is a great loss to the DSM community. I was looking forward to buying some parts from you this summer when I had some money to rebuild my transmission. Heck, it was TRE who convinced me that a transmission was not some magical box but instead was something put together by people that can be taken apart and repaired by people. Your website is super informative, your parts, especially your center diff spools, are spectacular and innovative, and the level of quality that can be expected is top notch. I feel this is a true loss as you are not a vendor who can be easily replaced.

If my pockets were a bit deeper I would send my transmission to you, but having most of the tools already I was really hoping I would be able to give it a go myself.

If you could at least continue offering the parts that only TRE sells such as the center diff spool and modified EVO shift forks to the public, and maybe post a list of common part numbers of tranny parts for people without CAPS, that would be spectacular.

If you have washed the parts up and inspected them for wear or damage.

If you have made a list of the parts you need.

If you know how to not blame me if your transmission takes a dump.

Then you are more than welcome to inquire about parts.

Jon,

Your transmissions are awesome. Its been holding up on my car for 15,000 miles just fine with a lot of abuse and fast shifting.

I was in the situation that Jon referred to. I had my tranny off the car, completely in pieces and I planned on a piecemeal build up. What I noticed is that my OLD tranny stopped shifting because the aluminum shift forks wore down to nothing. This also destroyed my dogteeth (sp) but the synchros looked good to my untrained eyes. This meant new shift forks, new gears, new bearings, etc. Then I had to get the right shims and figure out the preload. No way am I taking that sucker off the car twice just to get the shim preload correct.

Total cost was nearing $1200 on a used tranny in replacement parts alone. Also, the chances of getting that thing to shift right and not have problems seemed remote if I was doing the rebuild.

I paid the extra cash for a brand new upgraded tranny and couldn't be happier, gives me peace of mind that it had 0 mileage and was upgraded to my specs with heavier duty components.

Don't buy the parts and do it yourself. I have taken tranmissions apart and put them back together. I'm experienced in this sort of stuff and have the tools to do it at my disposal, and I still had Jon build it for me.

I watched him tear my trans down, and what he did in 15 minutes would have taken me about 5 hrs. When dealing with transmission, you just can't replace experience. He has it. Spend the extra bit of cash and have someone that knows what they are doing and can do it better than you do it.

Thats my 2 cents.

Everyone, what this gentleman just said should be part of biblical script. I work at one of the biggest DSM shops in the country, and I have torn down and rebuilt my fair share of transmissions, and I STILL had Jon build my tranny for my Galant. The man is a freaking savant when it comes to tranmissions, metal properties, or anything mechanical or electrical for that matter. This man can do ANYTHING he sets his mind to.

Everyone should go and visit him at his shop at least once. I guarantee you will leave feeling smarter (or dumber depending on how overwhelmed your brain becomes).

I'm lucky to be local to TRE. I got to watch both Jon and Ming work on my tranny and I must say I was damn impressed. Took Ming like 15 minutes to totally strip it.

Then Jon took the time to explain the magnafluxing process and show me how he hand ground all the gears by hand to relieve stress risers. This really impressed me because most shops would rather you just get the hell out and let them do the work so they can hurry you out the door and get your money.. Not TRE, they take time to explain anything you don’t understand.

Hell, I've even stopped down to TRE to ask other questions that are unrelated to my tranny and they helped me out. When I needed a manual steering rack and 90 style oil cooler, Ming found them for me.

If I never need anything trans related done again you better bet they will be the one who do the work for me.

Jon and Ming are 2 of the nicest and most knowledgeable guys I know when it comes to DSM’s.

this is a sad world! gears it sound like you just summed up my situation! although i am a cabinet maker the principle is the same! people call me up tocut out a cabinet because they want to save some money by putting it together themselves, my response is well i rather do it to ensure that it is done right, the response ,i can do it just cut the cabinet and sell me the parts! what do you do to stay in business, well i cut the cabinet and sell them the parts, they put it together and things doesn't go well because they did not have the proper equipment to ensure that it is square , straight , etc. you know what i mean, all of a sudden they call me complaining! all i got to say those type of people ruin it for everybody else!
