I just took my transmission out and installed a lsd. I put it all back together and was trying to install a new timing belt and car was hard to turn over by hand. So i realized i played with the shift levers and put it in neutral. It’s in neutral at the shift levers and it’s binding still. Engine is extremely hard to turn over by hand, and also noticed at the shift levers i can’t go into 5th and reverse. Could these be possibly related? I might’ve put the spring washer in backwards could that have caused major problems? It was turning freely by hand before i put the last cover on

Well, I'm suspecting you did something incorrectly on the reassembly, pull the trans and figure it out by tearing it down and take pictures of things you need guidance on.

You're going to have to describe all the work you did inside. And as said drop it and take it back apart. Sucks but it is what it is. Worst one I did was 8 drops in one weekend. Closest I ever got to selling out of frustration.

For sure i did something wrong, but i just don’t know what could do something like that. I read a guide step by step and double checked everything. I was just thinking maybe if it’s just a problem with 5th and reverse maybe i don’t have to drop the entire tranny? And it could be something under the first cover?

It will go into neutral but cant select the last rail? Did you mix up the 5th and reverse syncros accidentally?

Take the cover off and show us. Only thing I would think of is you put the intermediate gear on upside down
Okay I’m at my parents so I’ll have to get the pic later. I’ll double check the intermediate gear tho i didn’t know it had to go in a certain way so it’s 50/50

You can select neutral but it doesn’t move freely. When i try and turn the engine over by hand it moved the differential. And i don’t believe so, i kept that together except for the reverse synchro, which i broke and had to buy a new one. What happens if the sprung washer on top of put in backwards

Nothing of that consequence. Did you reshim anything? Did you remember to put the pins in the forks?

As well, did you install new crush washers under the reverse lockout switch and reverse light switch? If you are using over-crushed or missing washers, you will have shifting problems as well as wreck the reverse switch.

The 5th intermediate gear should have the flange facing up (towards the 5th gear cover). If you have the incorrect synchro on 5th or reverse it could cause jamming issues, and the reverse wave spring is required to fit the tabs into the reverse cone to lock it in place and it only orients in a certain spot.

I think you should remove the trans and do a teardown. What did you all touch in the transmission?

I almost mentioned the reverse light switch. It will jam the set if it doesnt have a washer or if it's too tight.
Unfortunately, take the cover off or pull it and see what is messing up the works.
Look at me....giving any kind of transmission advice.

Yes and yes. All i had to reshim was the differential

I don’t believe i did and saw this in a different thread and was curious. But not sure if it would cause my neutral problem. I touched pretty much everything in the tranny. What happens if the intermediate gear is in upside down? Imma just try this stuff through the first cover first before i do a complete tear down.

That’s cool af. But yeah imma just remove the reverse switch and still see if it’s binding, then the cover check the spring washer and intermediate gear. Then if still nothing pull it and start over

Man that sucks but it's all going to be good since you caught it now.

This is what it looks like when i spin the crank. I don’t know if this is how it’s supposed to look or not? But after i install the end car it starts turning the diff when i do the same thing

Well, with not even seeing any of the transmission components up close, I can see your hub and slider keys are pushed out on the 5/R hub and slider. Do you have the 5th gear synchro jammed?

I don’t believe so. I was thinking maybe the nut could get tighter? My impact is dead so I’m charging it and I’ll try

You're grasping at straws. If it turns fine but not with end cover on yiur problem lies with the 5th/reverse hub and synchro. Did you change anything? Did you make sure the orientation of the hub and sleeve are correct? They are not symmetrical. It is not an end nut problem. Please provide some close up pics.

I had to buy another reverse synchro cuz i put the 1st one in backwards and broke it. But other than that no i didn’t change anything

I tried tightening the nut after this pic before my impact died and the keys are definitely pushed more towards the transmission

Already mentioned it isn't an end nut problem. Intermediate doesn't touch the end case and input length/freeplay is determined by the bearing and bearing plate not 5th gear. So that leaves the entire 5th/reverse assembly. You've assembled something incorrectly on 5th/reverse and when you bolt on end case it's binding. I would remove the assembly and check it. I assume you did not change anything. Those synchro keys are definitely not sitting correctly and need to be corrected to be able to install the reverse synchro. Gotta ask, how on earth do you install a synchro incorrectly? Kinda only goes one way.

I put it upside down and thought the keys go over the top, yeah it was a dumb one. And no i trust that i was saying before you replied i tried tightening the nut, i definitely trust you over myself. If i were take some pics from the side of the 5th/reverse assembly would you be able to see where i went wrong?

I ended up stopping by and taking a few anyways

No not likely. You're going to have to take it off no matter what. Just loosen the nut and push the pin. Keep track of orientation and show us.
