hi
to start things off i was driving my 96 eclipse gs on my way to the off ramp and then i hit the highway and my car was stuck in gear!
it wouldnt shift out of 1st or 2nd gear and i read on another blog that it was most likely the shifter solonoid
and i have a spare tranny from when i bought my car because the guy thought the tranny was shot but i have no idea where or what the solonoid looks like and i would really like to get my car on the road as soon as possible
so if you fellow dsm'rs have any help or advice i would more than greatly appreciate it

I think you read my post and I was corrected. They have speed sensors, not a solonoid. I'm not very familliar with the A/T. All I've ever worked on is M/T. so o a resistance test on your sensors and cross reference them with the OEM specs. If you end up with too much or not enough, then you've found the problem. If that doesn't do anything. Swap the tranny.

hold on there is a transmission solonoid tho
i dont mean speed sensors
im 99% sure it isnt those
if it is my spedometer wouldnt work right?
but what would be the difficulty in swapping the trans out ?

Well a tranny swap is about 8 hours of your time if you're well versed with the 420a. I would reccomend pulling out your entire engine. It's easier to pull the whole thing and take the tranny off, than it is to try and fanagle just the tranny out. Especially the AT. That's gotta be a heavy SOB. And make sure you wear gloves when dealing with tranny fluid. Your hands will thank you. Like I said, I know more about the MT than I do the Auto.

Not necessarily. There are two speedometer sensors in an A/T and only one of them has to do with the speedometer. Furthermore, if either of them isn't functioning as expected you'll see some weird results. Also, they aren't variable resistance sensors like a temperature sensor; they send +8V or +5V pulses to the ECU varying in frequency.

You will either need an oscilloscope to view the signal, or you can measure continuity with a multimeter while slowly turning them by hand. The factory service manual (FSM) or technical information guide should have information regarding how many pulses are sent per revolution: I believe it's four, but you should certainly confirm.

Transmission swaps aren't necessarily very difficult, but they're not fun either. Automatic transmissions have a slough of sensors, plus you would need to remove the axles and hydraulics.

That's what I was told as far as the sensors...Man yer a good guy to have as a friend....you know ALOT about our rides...Thank God for DSMtuners!
