I know this isnt the right forum to post under and im sorry in advance but i cant use the drivetrain forum. IM about to purchase a rebuilt transmission and i need to know what tranny i have. is there an easy way to tell? Like a vin number code or a stamp on the casting?

You should have two Plates on your transmission. One on top and the other on the backside of the transmission against the firewall. You can also look at your plate against the firewall on the passenger's side next to your throttle cable setup, unless it has been removed or not longer visible. To get to the matter, you have a "40/41te Light" transmission that is just horrible in our N/A cars. Hope this gets you somewhere....

Is there a transmission i can replace it with that will be better for it? Also it would need to be direct fit. i dont want to fabricate anything at this time. just looking to get a good transmission in it soon. tired of it popping out of gear and tired of it grinding going into gear

I hear ya on that! Just had mine rebuilt and it still pops out of first from time to time. Interested in hearing suggestions on this as I'm gradually performing performance modifications and would like to get a decent tranny put into it at some point.

First, If we are talking about an Auto? Then "Yes", The A604/41TE light is JUST bad.

If you are talking about a Manual transmission, then you have SOME opinions! --> 1. Upgraded internals, "LSD opinion", Swap out for a NEON transmission, or just rebuild. ----------------------------Links below----------------- :heystupid: Start Researching & Developing!

The replacement for the AUTO is a 42LE/A606 with internals is just about the only way to go about your day, or what they are better known for is a "Throw-away" transmission = "A604/41TE" and just have a backup one in the garage until you need it. You can of course do an "Auto to manual Swap" and go about that. A Swapped upgraded Auto transmission is about the BEST idea in time/reason/funds/dependability.

Now when I had my engine rebuilt my mechanic had my transmission rebuilt for performance since we had to do a rebuild on it anyway due to the speedometer gear thing breaking off inside the tranny. What should I be looking for in terms of driving that would verify that this was done properly and what can I ask my mechanic as far as specifics are concerned?

Your sentences are running together and I am having a hard time understanding what you are trying to say! What I got out of your paragraph, was your "Vehicle Speed Sensor" has been broken off in your transmission? Then "Yes", You will NOT have a correct speedometer reading. If I am wrong about what I got out of it, then please reword what you mean....

I was simply stating that it was the reason we had to rebuild the tranny. It didn't really have anything to do with the question. The question was "What should I look for when I'm driving to verify the tranny was rebuilt for performance (gear ratios?) and what should I ask my mechanic if I have questions about the tranny?"

On any rebuild, a lot should be considered. First ANY and all techs. should be more than glad to in this case, drop the pan and show that everything is in working order. Again, checking for any PLAY in shifting while sitting and running, Slipping Linkage, abnormal noises/clicks/pings/ "the obvious". Transmission Fluid/Gear Oil is the most IMPORTANT thing, if it good or bad. Checking the "Internals" is a matter of a what they used in the rebuild and what UPGRADES they put IF any. Price & Cost of what it cost YOU or the Rebuilder??? Receipts/records are NEEDED to show that is was done and correctly. A nice bonus would be WARRANTY of some sort to show that he/she is knows what they are doing and are confident in their work. "2 years at the least"........hopefully this helps!

The shop I brought it to specializes in DSM engines and he gave me a 5k mile warranty on it, which I thought was reasonable. The tranny rebuild was around $900 but he didn't provide any specifics about the tranny or motor rebuild. Admittedly I was a little naive at the time and think I got taken for a nice $3000 ride. I wish I had more to tell you. Thank you for following this.

Ouch, Hopefully you got somewhat of an upgrade on the everything, and not even a half a year warranty is just sad. But hey, the NV-T350 is not that bad if you take care of the maintence and don't rag on it too much.

P.S. I don't know the national price rates between each state, But for $900, I would have rebuilt it and LSD to being a nice guy and for take you for a anything. $3000 overall is kind of high on n/a cars, but again prices/rates may be different.

I supposedly got upgraded pistons/rods and a new crank. Unfortunately nothing is forged. That would have cost me an additional $800. Believe me, I'd have paid it if I had it. I had to sell my other DD at the time to pay for the transmission rebuild. But its good to hear its a solid transmission. I was curious about 6-speed configurations but there doesn't seem to be anything out there for 420a nor does it seem necessary. I've learned alot and in the next year I'll probably just tear it down and have the engine built properly after I get my hands on a new DD. Thanks again!
