I have 3 transmissions all of which are screwed up in different ways (cracked bellhousing etc) and I have enough parts to make two good ones. I am installing an LSD in both of them. I was wondering if anyone has any tips for a rebuild. All of the shafts already have the gears and syncros on there and in good shape, so none of those will be removed. I read the vfaq on using solder and a micrometer to check the endplay and determine preload. However, I don't know which shafts on a FWD tranny require which specs. If anyone knows these and can help me, that would be sweet. thanks

Arnt you just suppose to torque it down with the solder than take the solder out and then measure the solder and getspacers machined, I didnt even bother with this because it looks as if I had already had a rebuild done and there where already machined spacers in there. The best thing you could do is go talk to a tranny shop, I know they will be able to help you out alot.

Even in a stock tranny there are shims. However when taking things apart, replacing the races, and pressing on new bearings, stuff may change. I have plenty of shims which should work, I just don't know which shafts require endplay/preload and how much. It said on Vfaq for an AWD, so I don't know if anything will be different for FWD.

Any suggestions on how to clean the tranny other than brake cleaner?
