I have a 2.4l Spyder N/a. My 3rd sychro went out and I want a new transmission, the engine is already out for a spun rod bearing so I figured why not do the tranny while I'm at it. ANYWAYS I found a transmission from a 1997 as follows:

1995
Transmission
Eagle Talon ESi,2.0L,5 Sp,FWD,T, C, A,Floor 142,654 A 378

Will this fit my 1999 Eclipse Spyder?! Yeah, its bone stock. Hmph. I read somewhere I will need to change bellhousings? Please answer fast, am picking up the transmission in the morning, just really need clarification right now.

No, that transmission will not work. The ESi had the 420A engine and its orientation is flipped from the 4G63 (2.0L Turbo) and 4G64 (2.4L) engines. Namely, the transmission in the ESi is on the driver side whereas the transmission in the 4G63 and 4G64 is on the passenger side. What this means is that if it were possible to bolt the ESi transmission to the 4G64 block, the differential would be in the front of the engine bay instead of the rear.

The Spyder was pretty specific with transmission compatibility. What works without question is another transmission from a 2.4L Spyder. A FWD transmission from a 95-99 4G63 equipped vehicle can work as well, but will require other FWD turbo specific parts.

Thank you for elaborating on that, it was skepticism on my part to post here in the first place. My random google search just turned up that the Esi did indeed have the 420a motor.

Just out of curiosity, what turbo parts will I need from a 2.0l transmission for it to bolt up correct? Correct me if I am wrong, but the 4g64 is the same cast as a 4g63 but with bored internals and a longer stroke to give it the 2.4? Those are just small differences, but seeing as they are from the same cast, would it not mean that the 2.0 transmission would bolt straight up to a 4g64 block?

Thank you for your quick reply! :)

Sorry for any confusion, it's nothing to do with the respective engine blocks. The difference is in the transmissions and associated components. The 4G64 was coupled with the F5M31 and the 4G63 with the F5M33. To use the F5M33, you'll need to also use a FWD turbo specific clutch, pressure plate, and axles.

EDIT: The bolded portion immediately above is not absolutely true. According to multiple posts/sources, you don't have to change the clutch/pressure plate.

All the same, be aware of something like this occurring which was my initial fear, there being a difference in the two bell housings and all: http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/drivetrain-tech/245094-2-4l-trans-vs-2-0l-trans.html

Ok, not going to deal with swapping in a F5M33. But if I am not mistaken, the 1996 Galant uses the same transmission (F5M31) mated to a 4g64 block.... So last question.... Will that transmission work?

All the part numbers check out, so it looks like it will. Check the transmission code, should read something like F5M31-2-VVXF and is found in '95-'98 2.4L Galants. Everything else should work as you have it in the Spyder.

Will call tomorrow and verify numbers. My googling turned up that the Galant runs the same 4g64 block with the SOHC head. The transmission numbers also line up, assuming this is a stock, rebuilt, transmission I'm looking at. As I said, I will call back tommorow. Thank you so much for the help 19Eclipse90.

I think I will make up a tech article for this topic, there seems to be a lot of misinformation on the internet pertaining to transmission compatibility with the 4g64. Anyways, thank you again!!
