Transmission 90 AWD

I have a 1990 GSX AWD 5 speed tranny. My question is what is the Spline number? some people say 20, 21, 22, 23? I need help? cause im looking to put a 91 GSX AWD tranny in the car will there be any differences?

I believe it depends ### year 91 u have. I used a 91 tranny in my 90 and it worked fine. Also u will need different shifter cables. Check out the Vfaq.com on the tranny swap.

The spline count if for the output shaft for the transfer case, Your best bet is just to yank the x-case and just count them. 22 spline is the most common but there are those are have the others (this guy for example)

So the most common spline count is 22 for a 1990 awd gsx. is it possible that some early 91 models had 22 as well?

Yes... If u want just yank out the transfer case and see if it mounts to the 91 trans. EZ only 5 17mm bolts.

I believe jacks tranny said something about one type having an aluminum case and the other splines being steel therefore ones magnetic and the other isnt
Long story short google jacks transmission Im pretty sure the answer lies in his site
And dont try "Jacks tranny" you might not like the results But then again I dont know you so..........................

if the bell housing (part that bolts to your engine block) is aluminum (mag doesn't stick) it's more then likely a 22 spline. Also the 1990 transmissions have a shorter shift arm. If your standing at the front of your car looking at the transmission, the horizontal shift cable arm (the one that goes from left to right NOT THE ONE THAT GOES UP AND DOWN) is 3 1/4" long, whereas the 91+ transmissions (same arm) have a 4" arm. 91+ could still have 22 spline transfer cases, so the shifter arms don't tell you anything...

I had this exact dilema with my car when I first got it. It's been a while so I can't remember exact numbers but I do know for a fact the '91 trans has one more tooth on the spline than the '90. I want to say the '90 was 22 spline and the '91 was 23 but I can't remember for sure. Hope that helps you.

This may sound crazy, but years back i needed a trans for my 92talon. I pulled one out of a bone stock 90gsx at the junkyard. It ended up being a 23spline. I didnt think this was a 90 option. Potentially someone down the line had changed the output shaft? Potentially someone had converted a 91-94 trans shift arms to 90? I used 90 shift cables as well.

Very possible and very likely, someone just probably threw the 23 spline shaft into the 90 trans, it's easy to do.
