I've searched this topic and haven't really came up with a solid answer. I bought a transmission for my 93 talon tsi and didn't realize it was a 90 model transmission. I swapped the output shafts and put the shifter cable bracket off my 93 transmission on it. Will I need shifter cables/shifter assembly from a 90 car? I've seen mixed answers on this I'd like to know if anyone knows for sure.

Oh you definitely need the 90 shifter cables and shifter assembly. You will also have to run the 90 bracket on the transmission. The arm is a different length on the gear selector shaft, so you need the correct parts for it to work right.

Thats really not what I was wanting to hear but oh well. Thanks for the info guys I guess i'll be looking for another transmission, it'll be almost impossible for me to find those parts around here.

IF you go make 16 helpful post than you will have enough post's to use the classifieds. You will find the 90 parts pretty easily. There is also, dsmtalk, dsmsource, ebay, craigslist, miller import and many more places to look.

Applying your self here makes a difference as well as shows how much you really want to figure this out. Another thing, you need to think about. I completly did a 6 bolt swap in my 93 awd talon with parts and information given to me here and bought through the classifieds. The parts and help are here.

The 90 shifter assembly IS different. You will need 90 shifter assembly and cables for it to work properly.

Having done this 12+ years ago i think i would know. He said he swapped out the tranny side cable bracket for the one that came with his car... therefore eliminating the need to swap out the shifter assy as well.

The actual arm on the transmission is different. That is not changeable. I have personally swapped 90 transmissions in 91+ cars, and 91+ transmissions in 90 cars quite a few times. If you don't swap out the cables and shifter assembly than you won't have the proper travel that you need. 2nd 4th and reverse will have problems.

So... does drilling and installing a bolt to shorten these distances make a difference? Never had a problem hitting any gear doing that. Basically a poor mans short throw shifter.
