What in the world is this wear from, the flywheel? Took my transfer case off to replace some clutch components (slowly getting there) and found this mess. Don't think it's recent (or even during my ownership), because I haven't heard anything grinding. I know there isn't a plate between the transmission and block as there should be. I have one ready to go on, but it's nowhere near as thick as the wear ring shown here.

The only thing I can think of would be a loose flywheel... at some point. I gave it a good push/pull through the starter and inspection holes, it didn't budge. But when everything else comes off, we'll see once and for all.

You guys have any other ideas?

PS. The second picture is of the aluminum shavings that got tossed back onto the rear portion of the case.

wow was it loose or did it have play... looks like at moments it would hit and at other moments it would just miss it...!!!

maybe your flywheel was loose or not straight at all...!!!

Wow, you can use your setup to do maching work... LoL
when you were unbolting the transfer case were all the bolts tight? Doesn't seem like your flywheel would have been loose because it's bolted to your crank and then the clutch holds pretty good force on it also. I'm thinking your transfer case moved somehow.

The transfer case was missing one bolt. The short one that's most difficult to reach, up on top. I shook it quite a bit before I had my exhaust off to see if it would have moved under those forces and it was solid. Leaning toward this being old damage from god knows what. The only thing stopping me from that was the presence of shavings, but I just remembered something. My starter was getting ground because of the lack of that plate I mentioned in the first post. And the shavings could have accumulated on the transfer case.

It's not difficult to pull the case back off. So I'll do all the repairs and stick something in the groove to see if it still happens. If not, it's probably from something that happened a long time ago. If so, well, back to the drawing board.

I wouldnt stick anything in there, I had a tiny piece of metal from a broken bolt get in my bell housing and the flywheel hit it and spun it with so much force it shot out the side of my bellhousing and made a hole about 2" x 3"

That is from the transmission not having all the bolts in. Usually it is the back small 12mm bolt. When you push the clutch it moves the tranny and digs into the t-case.

Not the complete, tranny-off view of the flywheel, but the teeth are in very good condition. I have pictures somewhere if you want me to find them, but it's not damaged. Since that's hardened steel versus cast aluminum.

Thanks for the info, TurboAnything. I know one bolt is missing, already having another set shipped to me from JNZ. I'll see if the short one is gone too, next time I'm under the car.

And there we have it. The long skinny bolt at the very bottom rear of the block was missing. Going to call this one case closed, thanks again guys!
