All transfer case recall threads are merged here.

Does anybody have a number i can call to see if my cars had the recall done?thanks.

Yeah, you'd be surprised. My local dealer replaced my transfer case twice, both times neglecting the yoke, so I had to call their district office to make them do it.

dang, well i have pics of my old one, i will have them pull it up on the lift and check my self, hehehe, then ill tell them, um thats the old one, wheres the new one, and show them the picture:thumb:

ok, update on my recall, called them today, said it might be done next tuesday, THEY have had it sence christmas eve. Any ways i called DSC to see about a loaner, no go they called the dealer. Any ways i was talking to the girl at DSC and was telling her what's been done so far and what the dealer has said they have done. She told me if there is any damage done that was caused by the transfer case Ie-tranns, clutch, drive shaft, center drive unit, rear pumkin as i call it, that it would be replaced, and that i should have a secound dealer opinon when i get it out. I think im going to do that, this dealer gave her a hard time over the phone about getting me a loaner. I have attached some pics of before it went in, a major leak with the T-case and the rear pumkin.. PM me if you guys think i should have any thing else checked out.

The last two pictures you posted are not covered under the recall. The rear differential has a fluid leak, it's not caused by the transfer case problem. The picture I edited below shows what's covered and what's not.

p.s. what happened to your repairs?

They where done, got a new T-Case and yoke. It locked up on them at the dealer ship, so they replaced it. I know the pictures that i showed are not on the recall but it was leaking else wear and did some damage inside that the repair kit could not fix.

Well, I appreciate that you have this sticky, but I must let you know that I got nothing but the run-around from a) the dealer, in person b) the Chrysler 1-800 number and c) NHTSA, they all said that this warranty is not a lifetime warranty, and that since it was performed in 1998 (it was only checked, and they thought at the time it was ok) that it only had a 1 year manufacturers warranty after that time.

So I got a leaking transfer case right now and theres absolutely nothing I can do to get them to repair it because of the recall. Whoever got it replaced, I guess it was the first time that car was brought in for the recall otherwise they should/would of given you the same trouble I'm getting

I did not have any problems with the dealer nor NHTSA, nor DSC. So i dont know what to tell ya, good luck with them and hopefuly they will come to there sences.

I have the same problem. The car was taken in for the service by the previous owner WHO KNEW BEFORE HAND that it was leaking. They just filled the transfer case and said "they had performed the necessary recall work". Now the dealership will not perform the service unless Chrysler authorizes it so now I have to call Chrysler and bi*** with them. This is the letter I sent the dealership and they called back a day later scared shitless. I suggest others to copy the letter and send it to their dealer. Edit it as needed.

To Whom It May Concern:

I am the 2nd owner of a 1992 Eagle Talon TSi AWD (VIN # *****************) that was purchased new at your dealership. When I bought the car off of the original owner he told me of a leaking transfer case. I knew it was a safety recall and asked why he hadn’t gotten it fixed. He told me he had taken it to your dealership and you had refused to do the work on it. All you did was add some gear oil to the transfer case. I figured I would just take the car back to the dealership once I bought it and have the recall service performed since it was a NATIONAL SAFETY RECALL and the affected parts are warranted for the life of the car. I was wrong when I thought you would do it. I brought the car to your dealership about 5 or 6 months ago to have the work done and was informed that you did not have to perform the recall and that I would have to pay out of my pocket. I am 17 and can not afford to do this. I was infuriated and still am that you would deny performing a safety recall. This is taken from www.nhtsa.gov:

Summary:
VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES. LOCKUP OF THE TRANSFER CASE CAN OCCUR DUE TO INSUFFICIENT LUBRICATION.
Consequence:
THIS CONDITION CAN CAUSE A LOSS OF VEHICLE CONTROL, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
Remedy:
DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE VEHICLES FOR ADEQUACY OF THE TRANSFER CASE OIL VOLUME, TRANSFER CASE OIL LEAKAGE, AND OPERATIONAL DEGRADATION OF THE TRANSFER CASE MECHANISM. IF OIL VOLUME IS INSUFFICIENT, THE APPROPRIATE AMOUNT OF OIL WILL BE ADDED. IF THERE IS TRANSFER CASE OIL LEAKAGE, AFFECTED COMPONENTS WILL BE REPLACED. IF THE TRANSFER CASE SHOWS OPERATIONAL DEGRADATION, THE TRANSFER CASE WILL BE REPLACED.

Since my appointment at your dealership, I have been adding oil to the transfer case every week to bring it up to the recommended level just to protect my life so the transfer case does not lock up while I am on the highway. If you still refuse to perform the necessary recall work, I will get in touch with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and will be giving Chrysler a phone call to let them know that you refuse to do the service. I would really hate to see your dealerships reputation to be scarred from this incident. I hope we can work this out.

if that letter doest work, i dont think nothing will, Good work el aguila:thumb: that should wake them up.

I really can't explain why some dealerships will perform a recall as many times as needed should the replacement part fail again. I don't know why the other dealerships won't.

Legally:
Everyone needs to keep in mind something though regardless of whether it's a transfer case recall or a bent tie rod end from you hitting the curb if you continue to drive the vehicle, KNOWING that the component is failing or has failed, then YOU and ONLY you are going to be held responsible for the consiquences of the accident.

Common sense:
If you have a vehicle that's not fit to be on the road DON'T DRIVE IT!!!

The cost of renting or buying a second car are far less than what it will cost to fix a wreck. Not to mention the lives you put at risk just because you don't want to pay for a repair or are not getting assistance from the manufacturer.

I just came back from the Chrysler/Jeep dealer. They checked out my transfer case and my seal is leaking. They are ordering the seal kit and installing it in two days. Good thing I went my fluid level was real low, and they refilled it, and I just had it filled back in Oct when J. Shepherd did my tranny.

Good thing I read this tread and was able to catch it in time before it locked up on me.

I would tell anyone who hasn't done it DO IT even if all recalls have been done on your car. Never hurts to have it checked to be on the safe side

My car is sitting at a local dealer right now. A new transfer case is on order and should be here today. My car is a 1993 Laser RS with 175,000 miles and the first dealer told me the same thing,".........the recall was done on xx/xx/1998, so we won't fix it now........."

I called the Daimler Chrysler recall center and got confirmation that the transfer case is a lifetime warranty as long as the damage was caused by the conditions that the recall was originally issued for (i.e. leaking fluid ). I will post later tonight a phone number for the recall center, as well as the Chrysler file number that refers to the t-case warranty. Go to the dealer with that and you should have no problem getting it fixed. ( I even had to get the car towed there on a flat bed because the t-case was locked up.)

That's funny...I took my car to a dealer and they said it had been done once and wouldn't do it unless Chrysler authorized it. So I called Chrysler and they said it is a dealer's decision whether or not they will do it the second time around. So I called another dealer and they performed the work hassle free.

its all in who you talk to and how you talk to them, I called 2 other dealers before i called DSC, and they are the ones that called the local one, and said that i'll be coming in for recall work. once they did that, it took them awile to get it done, but no biggy, i know its done now, so i dont have to have that in the back of my mind when im driving it. good luck to you all.

wow glad i found this thread. I just did a clutch in my 90 tsi & while i had the t-case out i noticed that it was almost completly dry of fluid & the splines on the input shaft as well as the splines in the t-case are totaly worn down to almost nothing..... But i didnt know anything about this recall at the time so i put the car back together (intending on replacing the shaft & t-case later) so is there anychance i can get this done under warrenty? I guess i will try calling the dealer tomorow

Just to clarify this recall is not the same as warranty. Warranty on most of our cars is dead and gone. This is a recall which gets done (at least for the first time) regardless of mileage on the car and up to a certain number of years since the build date or recall launch date.

1991TsiTurbo: make sure that the "Case number" you're posting is not specifically for your vehicle. In situations where a customer calls Chrysler for a concern about their car, they are issued a case number. That number ONLY applies to that customer's car and not the entire line of vehicles that match their description.

Glad to hear you're getting things fixed though.

ok so if your tcase leaks and grinds couldnt it cause other problems in teh drivetrain or whatever and do to the tcase wouldnt they have to fix it.. also i got a new clutch installed by this shop two months ago and ever since then my car when i am going down gears grinds very bad going into second and when i am going from first to second it grinds sometimes i cant put it into second because i am to scared i am going to break something. Coudl the mechanic of messed something up with that or what coudl that be.. sorry that was kind of off topic..

Let me get this straight, someone went in and replaced a clutch in your car. And now it grinds. And you think that it is transfer case related? The only way it comes even close is if the transfer case is low in fluid. There's only five bolts that hold it to the trans so installing it wrong is really difficult. It sounds more like improper clutch adjustment, low fluid level in the t-case or transmission directly related to their removal, or bad slave/master clutch cylinders. In either case the problem only started AFTER someone else went in to it and the recall will not cover fixing someone else's mistakes.

i was just wondering what could be the prob. i also have a problem when i decelerate i hear a griding noise kind of inbetween both of my seets it is hard to explain but i looked and noticed that there is some fluids on the outside of my case also

This doesn't have anything to do w/ a transfer case recall. If you take it to the help forum, you'll get a lot more people to see it and get more help.

i was just wondering if that could be it but i originally posted because i notices my t case had some liquid coming out of it and is always wet i will post in another for the shifting
