All transfer case recall threads are merged here.

Does anybody have a number i can call to see if my cars had the recall done?thanks.

I can't speak for the honesty of the dealership. And since I'm not looking at the car myself I can't say whether or not they are lying.

However, if it is the speedometer cable rubbing on anything then your speedometer would obviously not be working.

The speedo cable is below the throttle body area, it's screwed in to the transmission on the side closest to the driver's side firewall OF THE TRANSMISSION. If it comes out then there may be a chance that it could rub on an axle. But I've only worked on one or two 4g63's so I don't know just how long that cable is.

you said the cable is by the driver's side?... well the noise sounds like its coming from (under) behind the radio. The speedo still works fine... n what about the metal eating away at metal noise? idk if i cable rubbing would do this?....

What kind of noises did pple hear right b4 their transfer case locked up?

No, the cable is on the transmission which is on the passenger side of the car. But it is located on the side closest to the driver's side. It's almost straight down under the throttle body.

I've not seen any actually fail due to being out of fluid so the noise I can only guess would be similar to a differential bearing noise. It sounds almost identical to the brakes being metal on metal only the noise occurs all the time instead of only while braking. The pitch of the noise changes with speed as well.
This may be the same type of noise you're discribing. Without hearing it myself I don't know.

ok i called my local deale and my is getting looked at in the morning. i have looked at the car and tjis what i seen there is a lot of leaking and my transfer case seends all movement to the rear wheels. front tires will not spin, does this mean it needs replaced? any help would be a great. thanks.

Hey Dsmed I really need help. I have a '97 GSX 100K and the tcase is growling and making my clutch slip I already went through a clutch since september. I just installed an ACT 2600 and it slips. I called the number 1 800 222 0037. the dealership in Terre-Haute IN is try ing to get out of it. they said they have done it once ( in 1998 w/ 13k on it) so they don't have to do it again. What documentation do I need to get this done? any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks
Chris

hi guys. i was worried but now im not so worried anymore. i got under the car (90 awd) and saw purple gooish looking stuff coming from where the driveshaft goes into the transfer case, thinking i was F-d i decided to go to dsmtuners to check it out, turns out its covered i think. anyone tell me if these symptoms are what the problem is?

opon decel i get a gurgling / grinding in the center of the car (txfr case area)
and the purple goo.

TIA

well heres the deal i took it the dealer ship and they didnt inspect it they replaced the yoke and said it was ok, but yesterday on my home from renting movies yhe transfer case locked up. i called them and told them what was happend and they said theres nothin they can do. Doug99rs my only spins the back wheels i found that in the snow, no action from the front

That's impossible. The transfer case is what spins the driveshaft. So if it is locked up then the rear wheels will not spin. The differential inside the transmission may be giving you the problem. I am not familiar with internal transmission repairs but it MIGHT be possible that there are two different sets of gears. One for the two front axles and one is for the shaft that drives the transfer case. The part I'm not sure about here is whether the left front axle goes in to the transfer case or in to the transmission. In either case... the transfer case is getting energy from the transmission and then passing it on to your rear differential. I question the front differential which is inside your transmission.

If you Jack up the cars nose and spin the front wheels on an AWD will the wheels spin? Or will it make the rear spin also?

I looked last night and my tcase is leaking again. They just replaced it in May (see first page of thread). Im bringing it to a different dealership though.

I found it while hunting for this

I believe my Tcase is eatten.

It is possible to turn each wheel individually when it is suspended in the air. However, it is very difficult and should not be done just for shitz and giggles. Really the only time it should be done is when someone is performing an alignment and they need to position the machine heads up and down. Outside of that I wouldn't recomend doing it. If I'm not mistaken there are clutches inside the differential or transfer case that allows SOME independent wheel movement. If this were not present the car could only go in a straight line. Since all four would have been locked together then when turning it would not allow the outer wheel to spin faster and the inner wheel to turn slower.

So I take my car to the Chrysler dealership to get the recall work done. They say they wont do it because its already been done. BUt the previous owner before me took it to get recall work done and they just filled the transfercase up KNOWING that it was leaking oil. They said they had already performed the necessary recall work and wouldnt do it again. I tried calling Chrysler but theyre closed today. The dealer said that Chryslers new policy is they dont have to do it. We'll just see about that.

I just called Chrysler and they told me that I would have to try taking it to another dealer. They said they cannot force a dealer to perform any recall work. So Im on the phone with another dealer now.

I don't think modifications will void a safety recall, only warranties. Hey, will they replace the transfer case BEFORE it seizes, or only after you have proof its locked up?

HURAH! The mitsubishi dealer in Riverside, CA is going to replace my entire transfer case for free. If you're in the area, talk to Herb in the service center, good guy. :thumb:

Guys I hate to post again to this topic as if it hasnt been posted to enough. But I am curious if anyone has had the xfer case warrenty performed on anything newer then a 98 AWD. I was driving to base today when I started getting an odd jerky feeling. I pulled off on the next exit and about 10 seconds after I got off the exit my rear wheels locked solid. I am suspecting the Xfer case of course. I am thankful that I was only going 30mph rather than 75mph on the interstate around traffic. From what I have heard the warranty covers up to mid 98. My car is a 99 GSX. It is still under the 50k mile drivetrain warranty, but if this is a known problem even through the 99's, then I have even more leverage to make sure I get this thing replaced.
Also, if anyone has any experience with getting reimbursed for the tow charge from Mitsu please let me hear about it. I had to call in a flatbed and the cost to take it to the nearest Mitsu dealer is $450. I think the argument that if it is indeed the Xfer case, and if it would have happened about 10 seconds earlier when I was on the interstate I could be dead right now might help. If this is a known problem then I can use it against Mitsu to get my money back. *ANY* help is appreciated, THANK YOU!

James, the information I provided above only went up to the 1998 year model because that was the last year of the eagle talons. However, as you well know eclipses went up to 1999. I'm about 99% sure that the recall still applies to the 1999 year model but I don't have any printed documentation to back it up since I don't work at a mitsu dealership.

The repairs are performed by the dealership and they are reimbursed by the manufacturer. If I'm not mistaken, the manufacturer is the one you would need to deal with for reimbursement of the tow bill as well. As you stated, if you/dealership can prove that the reason for the rear wheels locking up, and the need for a tow, was directly related to the failure of the transfer case, MUST BE THE SAME TYPE OF FAILURE AS DESCRIBED IN THE RECALL, then you should be able to get reimbursed for some if not all of the tow bill.

One thing to keep in mind though is that typically any kind of towing reimbursements, whether its accident, component failure, flood damage, break-in or whatever, will frequently only pay for towing to the closest repair shop that can handle the needs of the vehicle. You didn't mention anything about where the closest dealership was so I figured I'd just throw that info out there so it's not a shocker. I hope that tow bill was to the closest dealership.
Doug

Thanks Doug. When I was waiting for the tow truck my mother supposedly looked up the nearest dealer online and that is where it is being towed to. I didnt know about this recall when it happened on Saturday and I just suspected the rear differential. I do remember looking underneath the car and seeing smoke/steam coming from the transfer case however. That is probably a pretty good indication of what happened. I never got a chance to get underneath it and check to see if there was grease around it since my car stopped in the middle of a bridge directly over the interstate. It had to be towed immediatly. As of right now my car is sitting on a flat bed, waiting to be towed to the dealer on Monday. I am hoping to hear good news of course.
