Hey guys what is the abailability of trans parts these days? I have a 1g trans that i got from a friend. I wanted to take it apart and freshen it up. What parts would i need to do just a rebuild assuming there are no broken gears or anything like that? I have taken a 1g AWD trans apart before, and know what I’m doing with that, but i was planning to take the gear stack to a trans shop to have the gear stack rebuilt.

Bearings seem to all be available these days, synchros and seals too. The problem is when you have worn teeth on sleeves and gears, or worn gear profiles on the shafts or the gears themselves, which makes things difficult. You won’t know until you open it up.

That’s a good sign. I was mostly worried about synchros. I could always find used gears if needed. I guess I’ll read into it! Where can i look for synchros? Would like to price it all out before i rip into it.

Another question i have is… I’m able to disassemble the whole trans, but not sure if i could handle pressing the actual gears off the shaft, and making sure things are installed correctly is this something most DSM guys do themselves or is that something only a trans shop should do?

I did it myself with a hammer, gear puller, a bearing separator, and a lot of creativity...but a press would have made it 100x easier.

Luckily or unluckily i am a Acura/Honda tech and have access to a shop press and splitters. I wouldnt even attempt it myself without one. My shop foreman said he has rebuilt s2000 transmissions, so I’m sure we can manage.

Finding the right transmission parts can be a challenge, especially for older DSMs. You might want to consider looking into rebuild kits or even sourcing parts from DSM-specific vendors. Also, aftermarket over OEM, depending on what you are aiming for.

there are some gotchas, hidden snap rings etc. Make sure you know what's what before you just start pressing.

I was reading the vfaq and the write up is done pretty good. Wish there were more pictures. I also have an OEM service manual so i can get all the specs. If i go with the jacks rebuild kit i would also need new spacers for the bearings right?

I just took mine apart last night. On the input shaft, there is a snap ring underneath the needle bearing sleeve for 5th/reverse that keeps the upper tapered roller bearing on the shaft. Make sure to remove that before trying to press off the gears LOL i made the mistake of forgetting about it last night and now i have to order a new snap ring.

ALSO just found out this morning that the upper tapered roller bearing for the input shaft is discontinued and out of stock almost everywhere. JNZ has them listed for like $160, and Jacks transmissions has them for $110..

Most shims are discontinued and out of stock too. Tim Zimmer was kind enough to sell me one of his personal sets i needed to shim my transmission right 2 years ago.

Heres a link to download a parts catalog for pretty much everything you should need for the car in its entirety, including the transmission stuff which also doubles as a visual guide on how its assembled.
