i have my car in for a head gasket repair at the dealer i work at.. its been sitting with a blown head gasket waiting for repair. its a long story. Fact is though, the trans has never given me an issue.. when the gasket went though (oil coming out of the cylinderhead and such.. just everywhere) it seemed to be coming out near the trans?? idk!

ANYWAYS. i started the car today to hear the sound the mechanic was talking about and it goes like this..

when i started the car immediatly something was rattling really loud. i pressed down on the clutch and it stopped. let go.. more rattling and griding.. im already 1k in debt with the head gasket repair now i have to spend more on the trans??? Anyone know what could be wrong?

honestly sorry for the scrambled / hard to understand info its just im freaking out and i start work in a minute.. HELLPP

^ No... It sounds like a bad Throw out Bearing. that is a VERY common sound and symptom. Try shifting into gears while at a stand-still. Once you confirm you can, try taking a very leisurely drive and test all gears.

More than likely, however, it's the Throw out Bearing. This is a retardedly common issue. The best way to check, however, is to check the components.

Welcome to OEM.

Welcome to OEM.

If it was the throw out bearing it will make noise while the clutch is pressed down.

If it was the throw out bearing it will make noise while the clutch is pressed.

Not correct.

Once the clutch is pressed, pressure is applied to the TOB and it is forced against the pressure plate. This causes most of the vibration to be quieted due to it basically being forced between two resistant forces. Again - this is a common issue. It could be something as simple as the clip which holds the TOB to the release fork has broken or come unhooked, or the bearing itself could be damaged and it is clattering around on the shaft. Think about it - With zero pressure on it, it will clatter. With pressure, it will not.

^ Sound logical.
I had a Transmission noise problem and as soon as i pressed the clutch it will go away i replaced the throw out bearing and the noise didn't went away. It ended up being the input shaft bearing.

I would do a transmission oil change and if the rattling and girding persists just pull the transmission out.

You must have had an unlucky day. It is so very common that the throw out bearing goes bad in our cars. And a lot of people replace them with knock off's that very quickly start making noise again. OEM seems to be a better purchase.

To OP. I know your costs are high already but when you replace the TOB, it is just a general good idea to replace the other related componants such as the TOB clip, fork, and fulcrum ball.

Sounds like trans internals are bad.

This right here is a perfect example of how people get the wrong information, Listen to what he said.......

when i started the car immediatly something was rattling really loud. i pressed down on the clutch and it stopped. let go.. more rattling and griding..

That absolutely sounds like the symptoms of a TOB. :nono: Now it could be the input shaft also, but my money is on the TOB.

From now on iugrad92turbo please do not post.

OP you're looking at minimal pulling the trans. While you're in there replace the TOB and give your clutch a good once over.

Drew

It could be either the throw out bearing or one of the internal bearings. If it goes away with pressing the clutch lightly and not all the way in I say it likely is the throwout bearing.

I would say tob also but I've had it the other way noise when depressed. But I'd start with the tob this is also a symptom of a failing input shaft bearing.

OP: goodish and bad news!! mechanic said its probably throw out bearing. i wont know until monday.. goodish news is he said its okay to drive on, if i put fluids in it could even go away!

I've been driving on a bad throw out bearing for 6 months. But a bad throw out bearing is a crap shoot every day you drive it.

I've had a friend who drove on one for almost 2 years then finally replaced it because he was tired of hearing it. Then i also had a friend whose throw out bearing started rumbling, and two days later it let loose.

My advice, if its in the shop already, and you can afford it, replace it now before your broken down on the side of the road hoping you had.

Dude. It's not like i commanded you to replace it. Just a suggestion based on the info that was here, so settle down. Drive it till it breaks if you can't afford it. Just be aware that every day you drive it, you risk it breaking down, which will likely result in a tow, and another trip to the mechanics.

THROW OUT BEARING FTW!

Same exact issue with both my 420a turbo and 1g, sounds like a honda beans-in-a-can exhaust for about a good 5 mins in the morning on cold startups. Isuue gone for the rest of the day tho.

HAPPY BOOSTING :)

Lol @ the dude telling me to calm down.. Haha. Okay so anyone had a TOB replaced? price estimation :(

mine is still rattling, grinding... been almost a year now. mechanic also confirmed probably tob. if you can't afford to fix it roll on till it breaks. it helps to letter your car warm up 5 minutes before you drive it :)

I have the same symptoms. Mix of scraping and grinding sound. Noise goes away when clutch is down. Not sure what's wrong but I'm waiting to exchange it myself and see what's up. I've taken my tranny in/out over 6 time in one year. I know, it sucks but you have to do it to save bucks.

I had bought an oem TOB from streettuned because my act TOB broke in half. Work great untill I switch my stock tranny to a jack tranny with welded center diff. I'm pretty sure all my internal and input shaft in the tranny are top notch, so I'm leading towards it being a bad throw out bearing.

Remember TOB can go bad anytime even if they are new/defected. My TOB was new, not even 200 miles on it.

Hope this helps.

Its the throw out bearing for sure. Just fixed this issue on my car. But I did it myself so I cant help on the price either. But change the clutch while you are there if the TOB is bad clutch most likely isnt far behind. Nothing worse then having to pull the tranny twice. Been there LOL.

Hey, the TOB is cheap as hell. You can replace it yourself in under a couple hours. Just use a trans jack, unbolt the trans, pull the trans mount out, and slide the trans away from the block. That should give you plenty of room to replace the TOB. Hell you can replace everything in there that way. just unbolt your slave cylinder, unbolt the trans, remove the trans mount, then slide the bell housing away from the engine. Really simple. Maybe 3 hours in total if you have never done this and are doing it for your first time.

Otherwise you are likely looking at a couple hundred in labor since they will rape you on labor saying they have to drop the trans to do it. Your maybe an hour from me, if I had garage space I would say bring it by and I would do it. But my garage is full ATM
