Hey guys,
I have a quick question here. I recently picked up a used FWD 4G63 transmission to keep as a spare for my '97 Spyder GST (at least I think it's for 4G63?). My plan was if I ever needed it, I would have it completely rebuilt so I wasn’t too worried about the miles on the unit.

Under closer inspection I see there’s a number engraved on the unit. To me it appears to be a VIN number? Am I correct? If I am, does that number match the same number that would be on dash of the car that this tranny came out of?

This leads me to my second question. The number engraved on this tranny is KF5M332SPZTUX0655. After doing some research online as on how to read VIN#s, the first letter K would mean "Korea" and the second letter F would mean "FORD" and the 10th letter is Z, what year does Z represent? W.T.F  Did I just buy a Korean Ford Tranny for my Eclipse? Heck, what did I just buy LOL  It looks to me to be a perfect match to the tranny I had out of the car a few months ago…. What gives?

Finally, you’ll see in the photos (circled in red) that that little rubber ball / plug is missing. What’s that piece for anyway??

Thank guys!!

Thanks Defiant!!
I always thought that there was a VIN number on the dash, tranny and engine just in case the car got stolen and was parted out. Thus the police would have some way to trace the parts (if they ever decided to do that much work LOL) and/or if my car ever made it on the Barret Jackson auction block, I could advertise it as a "numbers matching car" :thumb:

So I guess the "F5M33" is indeed the proper tranny for my '97 Spyder GST, but does anyone know what all the other numbers represent?

Thanks
Peepers

The 'SPZT' relates it to what vehicle model the transmission belongs. In this case, D32A or D38A, which is a 2G FWD turbo car, like Dan said.

19Eclipse90, do you have a link to where you found that info?? (ie: 2SPZT = D32A)
It appears that 2G FWDs (GST) are D32A and 2G Spyder (GST) are D38A

Found it in one of the manuals I downloaded over the years.
