well after 5 months of gathering parts, money, and a new head, i have finally completed my auto to manual conversion. it feels so much better than automatic, it grabs so much harder and i love it. but i am having a small problem i think. i have some gear noise in 3rd and 4th, is this normal with a tranny that has 107k miles?? i have the specified dealer fluid in it and its filled all the way. is the tranny just worn a bit??

but other than that small problem its running strong and im very pleased. id just like to thank dsmtuners and everyone here for helping me with this little project.

thanx

Thats not common, no. How exactly does it sound?

How did you end up setting your mounts up? Did you get all 4 back in place? I've still yet to figure that part out yet. Ive only had 3 mounts on.

which mount is it your having trouble with?? if its the firewall mount then i can probably describe how i did mine, if you wanna do that. its kinda haggard but its working fine for me, main reason i did it is because there are no cars in this area that are 2g 5spd n/ts with engines still in them and i didn't wanna pay another 53 dollars for a piece of metal from the dealer.

anyways my tranny sounds like you can actually hear the gears inside the tranny, kinda rough sounding but not too severe sounding. only in 3rd and 4th though... im stumped right now, ive gotten all mounts on, bought the tranny/left strut area mount from the dealer, customized the firewall mount, and the crossmember mount worked out with no problem. there is no slippage what so ever under hard acceleration, but my right side a arm is a tad loose considering i only have one bolt in it right now because the other one snapped off, damn rust!!! but that is only giving a little knock under acceleration/deceleration, so i gotta drill and tap that and ill be almost done.

if anyone has any ideas why i would be having gear noise in 3rd and 4th i would appreciate your help with this.

Yep its the rear mount by the firewall. I got it bolted on with one bolt.. I just cant get the damn holes to line up. I fought and fought with it for hours.

no, i have have no way to record it... but i have matched the sound with something that is somewhat common to some people with manuals, ok you know how when your shifting and you either dont have the clutch disengaged all the way and try to shift, or get a mis shift how it sounds when the gears dont mesh against each other properly and its sounds rough, like grinding the gears?? well that is the sound, but not as loud... ive noticed its getting tougher to actually shift now also, my dad is thinking its the syncronizers. is this a possibility?? and how hard to replace?

thanx all
:dsm:

Does it make that sound when you shift or while driving in gear? If it's the latter I 'd suggest (even though I 'm sure you are already sick of messing with it :D) to pull the tranny and crack it open not to make things worse.

i pm'ed you spyder97gs with the mount info

sorry quoted wrong post

ok, i just went out to check the tranny fluid, when i pulled the fill plug it started pouring out of the hole. obviously the tranny was over filled, could this be why the im hearing gear noise, it doesn't really seem logical but just thought id ask. and it was on a perfectly level surface...

ok, its getting louder, it sounds like a rough bearing. i relate to this because i skate and my bearings are usually shot and this sounds like the same but very much louder. it makes the sound in every gear now and in neutral with clutch engaged, its quiet with clutch disengaged. its shifting fine, even on hard shifts. so thats why i am leaning toward this. so is it a possibilty that my "gear noise" is bearing noise??

thanx

the loudness of the tranny is progressing and is still shifting and grabbing really good in all gears.

please someone help me out with this. is this symtoms of the input shaft bearings being bad and/or other bearings??

anybody??
thanx

Sounds like you nailed down the problem with the bearings. Bad news is the only way to fix it is to pull the trans and crack of the case and check your bearings to see if there are any deformities in the bearings. They should be very smooth with no wear on them. If you have the cash, I would suggest a rebuild while you have it apart again. The bearings will only be $20-$30, but you have to ask yourself how much longer is this trans going to last in its current state. Pulling the trans is a pain in the ass and I doubt you will want to do it for a third time in such a short period of time. Best of luck to you.

so you do think its a possibility that its the bearings in the tranny??

and yes im gonna dread taking this back out of the car, even tho im wanting to in the first place, damn TOB didn't stay on and adding to the noise and making my car sound like a jalopy. when i ordered the clutch they sent me some cheap plastic TOB that doesn't stay on for anything when your putting the tranny on the block, so im gonna get an OEM one.

as for the bearings, can you buy those in a set of all the bearings, and am i obligated to get them at the dealer?? if not where could i get these bearings??

thanx

I can't be 100% without hearing the sound first hand, but from what you are explaining it definately sounds like it. I'm not sure if the bearings can be purchased all together as a set, but the only place that I have found them was through a dealer. Hope everything works out for you.

I replaced a diffferential bearing on my FWD once. It was about $30 for the inner and outer races.

yeah thanks for pointing that out, i have a question about that. the sound is only when the car is moving, i mean there are very faint sounds standing still, but the real noise is when moving with the tranny in any postion (neutral 1 2 3 4 5 R with clutch in or out)is when it makes the noise. so is that the differential bearings causing that or could it still be the input or output shaft bearings but just with a load on it causing the bearings to make the noise that way?? cuz i thought with the clutch or in neutral in there isnt much load on the input/output shaft bearings...correct? its making the same sounds just coasting either way.

so actually this sounds more like the differential bearings to me, what do you all think??

thanx
