Hi, my transmission in my 1990 Eagle Talon recently took a crap on me. So, I got a hold of a 91 parts car, and began taking out everything needed to change trannies from a 90 to a 91. Once I looked and saw that the the shifter was a 91-94 style, I knew that I needed to get the shifter and cables, as well as the transmission and transfer case. So far, I have the transmission from the 91 car all bolted into my car, but Im experiencing some problems.

I got the 91-94 shifter and cables into the car before installing the 91 tranny, and all seemed well. But now that I have the 91 tranny in place its very clear that something is very wrong. The cable's do not line up to the shift levers on the transmission AT ALL. Theyre about 2-3" too long. I cant even get the shift cables to hook onto the shift cable bracket that goes on the tranny!! I tried forcing them backwards and onto the shift cable bracket and then hooking them onto the shift levers, but this made the shifting extremely tight and was obviously not right. Ive also tried adjusting them, but theyre far too long to be even close.

What could possibly be wrong? Does the 91-94 shifter sit back farther in the 91-94 cars or something? Did I install the cables wrong? Are my cables and my transmission simply not from the same car?

Here are some pictures to help illustrate my problem:

The actual shifter assembly(under the shift boot) is different in 91-94 than 90 cars. % bolts IIRC and you should be golden since you have everything else in place. After that you might have to tweak some adjustments but I think the 91 base will get you very very close.

Put the old one back in! Its great that from the pics you can tell the problem lies way before the tranny. Screw loose behind the wheel maybe?

the shifter bracket on the transmission is different from different years.

either have the cables that match the tranny, or swap the braket. should fix the problem.
