Tranny shipping

Hello.
I need to ship an Eclipse transmission (F4A33) from USA to Italy. Any suggestion on how to do it?

If I were doing it, it would be a toss up between getting a large plastic shipping case, wrap the transmission in plastic after plugging all the holes and fill the shipping case with expanding foam. Or build a wooden crate with a cradle to hold the transmission.

I think I'd ask the shipping company which way they want and will insure first.

When I just shipped to jacks I cut an old skid down to fit the size of the transmission. Then built a crate and lid around it with two loops for a racket strap. I used 1” foundation foam too on the bottom and the sides.

The problem is that even if the transmission can fit in a standard case (30x30x30 inches), it is overweight ( more than 150 pounds).
It has to be ship freight......

International shipping would be a bit different from domestic shipping.
I can't tell for sure since I don't know how the things work in Europe. But I guess if you are doing this in person and wanting to ship it by a common delivery company as normal package, the only way would be you disassemble the transmission and ship separately as parts by multiple packages and you assemble in Italy. Each package must weight less than approxi 30kg in general. For example, let's say shipping by 3 packages. One with gears, one with diff and small accessories, one with cases/oil pan, like that. Otherwise it would be a special oversize/weight shipping. I think that would be more complicated and more paper work (Sometimes they may even ask you some sort of certification/proof that shows inside is clean and dry and you may need to ship with a pallet).
If you buy the transmission from a store, and if the store internationally ships heavy/large parts often, they may have a good shipping rate than shipping personally. Or I don't know about in the States but in Japan there are some companies that can do all paper work, packing and shipping. You should try to look for one like that company in the States. If you don't care about the cost, that would be the easiest way.
Either way it would cost a lot, I am sure that it would cost much much more than the transmission itself. So I still recommend to look for one in Europe if possible.

In Italy we don't have the expertise to modify or rebuild a 1995 Mitsubishi Eclipse automatic transmission. The only part I could have eventually disassembled is the torque-converter. But even without it, the transmission stays overweight....
