ok so here is the whole story:

I started my car and was driving out of my neighborhood and i noticed the speedometer jumping up and down like 5-10 mph while driving. then on the freeway it would only work when i accelerated, then it just didnt work at all. stopped at my destination and then got back into the car to drive to a friends. got off the freeway downshifted to 3rd and it grinded then at the stop light i could not get it into first without having to really jam it in and it was the same for second and third. also it shook real bad when starting from first and while shifting to second at low rpms. had my buddy sit in the car with it off and shift gears while i looked at the tranny, it moved back and forth a couple inches when he shifted(tranny mount?). got back into my car to drive home and tried double clutching to get it into gear and that makes it alot easier to get into gear. when i got home i was looking over it and noticed that one of the shift cables looks really messed up, they have little shock looking rubber peices and the left one looks fine but the right one is all twisted and deformed idk if this could cause the problems? i will include pictures of my tranny so you guys can check it out and see what im talking about.

after further looking over the transmission and car i noticed on the back upper end of the differential housing was a cable going into it and that there was no screw in the hole where it looked like it should be. the other end of the cable ran into the drivers side firewall so i looked it up in my haynes. it is the speedometer driven-gear seal and oring. so this is i assume what caused my speedo to stop working but how does this affect the car not wanting to go into gears? and could this have damaged the rest of the tranny? and how do i go about fixing it. in the meantime im going to search the forums but i would appreciate some replies.

This being a 91 I am going to guess that it has 120k plus miles on it and that it has never had any tranny problems up till now right? And I am also going to guess that at some point in the last week you might have done a little bit of high rpm driving, with a few hard shifts or that it has been driven like that since you got it. I did that and the pressure plate popped in the tranny causing some of the teeth from the spider gear to come off, and I was left with a hole in the case. It was still drivable and was hard to shift as you had said AND THE SPEEDO DIDN'T WORK. I would recomened getting it towed to a shop you trust and get them to take it off and check it out. If what happened to me happened to you..... your looking at 4800 for a new tranny. That was for a 2g however. I hope you have better luck than I did.

OH one last thing. I would avoid driving it if at all possible. It might not be damaged beyond the point of no return yet so dont give up all hope. I might be as simple as just needing new tranny parts or new spider gears which is what I'm guessing is wrong with it. But either way you gotta get it to a good shop.

First of all, paying 4800 for a tranny is completely ridiculous unless your buying a shep stage 4 and i dont think even those are that much. you got screwed. and its up to you if you'd like to take it to a shop or drop it yourself it really isnt that hard.

It is a stage 2 and the guy that did the work said that if ANYTHING went wrong with it to bring it back and he would fix it free of charge up to 25k miles. I think I got a hell of a deal. As a side note that was the complete cost of the tranny change work included.

I had the same exact problem with my car about 3months ago, car shaking, speedo not working all that. The car even shut off on me what I did after looking it over is just took it in to a shop one of friends recommended (thats usually a good way to find an honest shop) but yea the guy only charged me about $280. Some other shops I went to before that were telling me I needed a new tranny and were asking around $1,400 so make sure you shop around. Good luck:dsm:

Either your tranny is leaking fluid from every direction, or you have a alot of oil leaking out the head/block and onto the tranny.

You need to pull the tranny out and most likely have it rebuilt. While you do that have the flywheel resurfaced and either upgrade the clutch or get a new stock one.
