alright here's the problem. i sold my 98 gst today. the buyer was on his way home today driving in fifth gear when he tried to accelerate and the car just reved up and felt like it wasn't in gear. he called me and i tried to help him diagnose the problem over the phone. the car runs fine. no problems. the engine runs great and is stuck in neutral. the thing is that each gear will go into it's physical location freely, as if it wasn't attached to the transmission. however the transmission will not go into any gear no matter what. my first thought was that it was the shifter cables. i had him pull off the shift boot and he said that the cables were attached to the shifter and that checked out fine. he had the car towed to a nearby transmission place and is having them diagnose the problem. i told him to also have the mechanic double check the shift cables at the shifter and at the trans. i've been searching the forums this evening and cant find a problem like this. i haven't physically taken a look at the car since the problem. all this info. is from what the buyer told me. what do you guys think the problem is? i feel really bad that this happened because the car drove great when i had it and it never had any problems. i want to help this guy out and do what i can for him. can u guys post some ideas and solutions to what you think the problem could be? thanks

Clutch could be toast. Defiently check the cables on the transmission side. I would think its the clutch if the car goes into gear, but the RPMS just shoot up and the car goes nowhere.
