Ok. Here's the deal.

Driving down the highway, driveway, street, wherever.
There's a grinding noise, but only when accelerating or maintaining speed.
If i have the car in neutral, or the clutch depressed, no noise at all, regardless of speed.

I can rev the engine, and it's quite responsive, again, with no noise. But if the car is in gear, there is a definate rubbing / grinding sound. Does not diminish or get louder with a left or right hand turn, so I am thinking it's tranny, and not CV, but from searching, i have read that both could be a possible cause.

Also, car does not feel like it pulls as hard as it used to.

Goes into gear easily enough, sometimes with some grinding into 1st, but that's minimal.

Any suggestions to fruther troubleshoot this issue, so I don't thrown hard earned money at a non-problem?

Many Thanks.

Dave

Thanks for the replies.

This leads me to one more question.

Is it worth the trouble to find a kit and rebuild it myself, or do I send my tranny AND Tax refund check to Shep?

Mind you, I'm not looking to build a drag car.. Just a daily driver.

I think I can get a rebuild kit for around $250 (If I read the site right), or I can send the tranny and about $900 to Shep, and get it done professionally.

It boils down purely to a question of cost. It'd be much cheaper to do myself, but I'm not sure if this is an undertaking I should be doing, having never rebuilt a tranny before.

Thanks again for the replies.

Have John Shepherd do it. He is the best and you'll never regret it. He did the tranny in my road race car, and it takes a lot of abuse. We cracked it open at the end of last season and were amazed what good shape it was in :thumb:

I'm pretty certain its tranny rebuild time.

Probably the input shaft bearings are gone... cv's usually pop when they start going bad in turns.

5 points to you. You nailed it on the head. Now to spend the next month measuring things, checking things, and putting it all back together.

Here's an image, if you want to know how far gone the input shaft bearings are. ;-)

Mine is doing the exact same thing. I'm glad i found this, my tranny is doing that only probably worse. It is really loud! I just bought it, as a new daily driver, and i already gotta tear this one apart. when i got it i thought it was the shitty front brakes making the noise...obviously not since i replaced those.

...now in need of a new trans :thumbdown

Been through the same thing man..

4 new rotors, 4 calipers, rebuilt, from a junkyard. 4 sets of brake pads.

2 alignments, a new clutch.... and after all that (which dont get me wrong, the car NEEDED all that), i find out that THIS is the anoying noise I have been hearing all that time.

Going to see about getting a Junkyard tranny as well.. To get her back up and running when I get the head back.
