Ok shifting into 1st and 2nd is ok, 3rd is pretty notchy, and fourth is the worst. It doesn't grind, but it like won't go in, or i'll miss the shift, and its kinda notchy, not very smooth. 5th is fine as well. Is this my transmission fluid? How hard is that to change?

Ummm, your tranny fluid is very simple, something that can be done with a simple floor jack and 2 stands. There are 2 bolts, one filler, one drain plug, they are towards the end of the tranny on the passenger side, they arent hard to miss. I'd change the fluid anyway if you cant remember the last time you changed your tranny fluid. Check your shifter cables, as well as the shifter bearings, they could be the source of the problem. Who does the work on your car??? Im just suprised that you own a DSM and you dont know how to change the tranny fluid???

Try putting GM/Pennzoil Synchromesh in the tranny to see if that helps.

You should also to check to make sure there is an appropriate amount of fluid in there. Jack it up so its sitting even on a level surface and pull off the 'fill' bolt on the transmission. The fluid should just be at that level.

You have several choices of fluid. From BG Synchromesh to GM Synchromesh to everything else in between. I am using Mobil 1 Full synthetic engine oil in my trans and have for several months. So far, so good. Use the synchromesh fluids until I can go a year with no troubles. I'll keep everyone posted. I do have a lot easier shifting. Especially in cold weather. So far no grinding or notchy shifting. Something Mitsubishi has been plagued with for years. Especially the 1g's.

There's a 17 mm bolt in the front of your trans and a 22 mm bolt in the bottlm. Fill until it runs out the fill hole. Give it a try and post your results.

Good Luck

I've only owned the car for a week, so i'm still pretty new. I have no idea the last time the old owner changed it. Whats the recommended time for tranny fluid? I know engine oil is about 2000-3000 miles.
