Ask Me, Virginia
I want some good tranny fluid to rule out fluid as a cause of a notchy third gear. Some of you say BG, some say Redline, and I have had good luck with Synchromesh in the past.

The fluid doesn't need to STAY in there, I just need a quick fluid for diagnostic purposes.

This post was intended to be narrow, so please don't post concerning other causes of a notchy 3rd gear. I will create a seperate post for that since I have already done alot of things that you might suggest.

Thanks.

You have the basic answers above. If you're looking to diagnose a notchy 3rd gear and not concerned with what stays in there, then why not go with what you've already had luck with? This is pretty much pointless considering that it is apparent that you've searched for the answer and have come across the recommended fluids. It's about like asking "I know BPR6ES' are the right plug to use, but what plug should I use to diagnose a misfire?"

Chances are your problem is not the fluid. I just tore down my trans with a notchy 2nd and 3rd and found the syncro's about done, no magic fluid is gonna fix that.

If your really grasping for fluids just try a decent gl-3 compatable fluid and drain and refill. If fluid does not fix it time for a rebuild.

In the past I have used syncro mesh with lucas, cheap costal and some generic gl-3 fluid at the parts store all seemed the same.

I don't understand what you are trying to convey. I have asked about multiple fluids. Coastal isn't working in there and it is already in there. Lot's of people here have cited improvements with using different fluids and I want to know which one is the "one" that would more than likely improve notchiness. Your post makes no sense to me.

Entirely possible, but I want to rule this out as being a tranny problem. I wanted to keep the post narrow because the thread will take the wrong direction. I'll start a new thread as to what happened later. Right now, my question still stands. Certainly makes more sense to try some alternative fluid out first to see if it gets better or goes away.
