Hello there,

My car has an extremely bad grind when shifting to 2nd gear. Since I got the car, I have been just double clutching and rpm matching, so I can get it into second. It has now got to the point where it will occasionally just pop out of 2nd. I really want to know what you guys think is the best route for fixing this issue... Have a shop put new synchros in? just get it fully rebuilt? get a used one? I was looking at rebuilds here, but I have no equipment to take my tranny out and put a new one in. I currently live on a college campus, and don't have time or equipment for extensive work. I am wondering what you guys think would be the best route to go?

Thank You!

Tranny shop is your best route to go while on campus.

Plan on a rebuild, but can be lucky with just syncro replacement since the 1st/2nd gear syncros are totally shot.

Borrow a bicycle while the car's in the shop to git to your classes.

Are the Aamco shops reliable? That seems to be the closest shop near my location.

Thank you for your help by the way :)

Aamco are good for a decent repair price, in which with your condition, it should be just syncro replacements.

Give them a holler, explain your condition to them and hope their answers can help you along.

Good luck - DSM

Yeah I talk to Aamco in my area, but they said they will only replace the tranny and not repair it. They also said they would respond with an estimated price in a few hours and its been a day and a half... Looks like I am finding another route.

Tranny shops will rebuild the tranny, since it's not rocket science to strip down a tranny and put in new syncros since they've got the equipment to perform such a task. Might have to 'shop' around for sure.

Good luck - DSM

If its popping out of gear it isn't just synchros. There is no way to answer the rest od your questions. Did you want or need major repairs or just want to fix this one problem? Tranny can take 20$ in parts or 1000$. Depends on what's wrong.

You might be better off buying a known good trans from a friend. When this happened to me my mechanic recommended changing the gear oil to mt-90 because this helps sometimes. It helped a little but I ended up having to buy another one. It sucks having a trans like that pops out and grinds.

Prepare for the worse.

Thanks for the help guys. I am just going to be getting it rebuilt in the next few weeks by a shop I found.
