I recently installed a tranny onto my 91 GSX off of my brother's 91 TSI (w/ABS). For some reason, it didn't just slide onto the block, I had to get it as close as I could to the block, then slide the bolts through their mounting points and slowly tighten the tranny to the motor. Is that normal...at all?

Not to bump my own thread but, no one can tell me if the tranny is just supposed to slide onto the block, like all the way and then just slide the bolts through and tighten it down, or what?

Hi, and thanks for the PM. I'm going to answer here in your thread in case anyone else has the same problem, then they can also get the same info.

It's not always easy to get the tranny all the way onto the block without a little bit of extra force. Ideally the tranny should be aligned perfectly so the input shaft slides into the clutch disc smoothly, and the alignment dowels on the block also line up properly. Using the bolts to pull the tranny onto the block is a bit excessive, but as long as there are no gaps between the trans and block you should be OK this time. I wouldn't do it to my car, tho. I can usually get my tranny back on the block with a light push. One time I was in a hurry and I gave it a good kick to get it back on, but the tranny still slid all the way up to the block before I put the bolts in.

How much torque did you have to use to move the tranny closer to the block? Was it a light ammount, or did you have to crank on the bolts?

It was a good amount of torque, it didn't seem right, but that was the SECOND time of getting the tranny up and attempting to get it on the block. So, dreading a third time of trying to raise the tranny up into the engine bay, I just slid the bolts in and tightened them down, all the while wondering if that was ok to do.

The tranny got pretty close to the block, maybe an 1" or 1-1/2", but then no amount of wiggling, pushing, shoving, etc. could get it to move any closer, and I did use an alignment tool for the clutch disc, so it wasn't (i hope!) an alignment issue.

Does it run and shift OK? Are there any clutch issues? If everything works correctly, then don't worry about it.

Sometimes the clutch alignment tool fits a little loose and the weight of the clutch disc lets the disc slide down an extra millimeter or two. It's not much, but it's enough to make it difficult to line up and install the tranny. Here's what I do when I install a clutch; I'll snug down the pressure plate bolts just enough so it holds the disc in place, but not so tight that I can't move the disc. Then I use the alignment tool to slide the disc around to get an idea of how much free play is there. Find the center point within the freeplay and center the disc, then torque down the pressure plate.

works for me :)

Besides the vibration while driving which increases with speed, and the shifter slop, which is in the linkage not the tranny itself, or so I've been told, it runs fine. heh.
