Ok so last night i was driving along and i hit a massive pothole in the road an all of a sudden i heard this scrapping noise coming from underneath my car, so i get out to investigate an notice that my trailing arm on the passenger side has sheard off where it gets bolted to the frame. Now i took a look at it today cause i was gonna try to weld it back in place but there is hardly anything left of the bracket :banghead: now i was hoping that someone has came across this problem an might have a solution. I have not drove it since because i am not sure if it is safe to drive. Any input on what i should do would be of great help to me. Here is a picture of what is left of the trailing arm. I also wanted to know if its safe to drive my car or not ?

ok so I have been doing a lot of searching on the internet an can't seem to find a bracket or anything for this problem. I am thinking I might have to fabricate something together in order to fix this problem.

Post up a picture of that area of the car. I'm assuming it's completely rusted through and mostly gone?

This same thing happened to a buddy of mine with his car (non-dsm) and the car was never driven again afterwards. It's a large project to replace a structural area of a car that is badly rusted.

I would figure you can cut and weld new replacement metal of the same thickness... but im no expert
If the damaged area is small enough, this is an option. But you can't weld to rusted steel, so you'd have to keep cutting until you reach good material all around the failed area. And if the failed point has 8+ inches of rust all around it, it's going to be difficult to replace such a large area on a unibody car. In the case of my buddy's car, we would have had to replace a corner of the car that was larger than a basketball, and that required more work than the car was worth.

No it is not safe to drive.

Take a pic of where the damage is on the body and clean it up first so we can see what is and is not there.

A body shop can get you replacement panels and brackets.

It a big job either way. If I was you I'd be look a lot closer at the rest of the car. You can almost always bet if it rusted in one place there are others.

ok thank you guys for the responses. I knew that it was not gonna be a easy job but I have an uncle who is an expert with fabricating. My plan was going to cut out the infected area an hopefully go to a junk yard an find a suitable donor car an cut out a large piece to work with. You say a body shop might have something I'm looking for, I did not know this what would I ask them when calling? I am going to jack my car up right now an take many pictures for you guys an you tell me if its worth a repair or not. As for the other side it is solid from what I see but I think I'm gonna grind that side down an reinforce it just to be safe. I'm not sure what metal I should need so if anyone can chime in with that information an possibly a good place to get some that would be of great help.

Ok so here are the pictures you asked for it is really bad, i never looked at this when i got the car :banghead: . But the box is completly gone an the frame is starting to crack on that side also. This really sucks but it looks like im in nedd of a shell now :(

Here is the ratty ass pictures.

holy shit, i've never seen that much rust. That really sucks, best of luck though

yea that is many years of new York weather. what gets me is I am a mechanic an I never looked at this when I bought it last month, all I saw was a tsi awd an wanted it an spend all my money on it. Guess its my own stupidity. I got to enjoy my first turbo car for a whole month.Back to square one. Thank you all for the help you have given me.

I almost forgot to ask but what is a fair price for a good shell. I plan to use my motor, e-prom, tranny if auto shell an all my mint interior pieces wish I could say that about the body!
