pulled the engine in my 96 TSi AWD to do a timing belt, balance shafts removal, water pump, etc... got everything back in, drove the car and it threw a 0120 CEL code. Throttle position circuit malfunction.

So I checked my TPS values with DSMlink and at idle, no foot on the gas it was at about 3.8 volts and around 75%.

I put my foot to the floor and it jumped to about 4.8 volts.

I got home, pulled the TPS off the throttle body and as soon as I removed it from there my friend was watching the log and said it went down to about 1 volt... I turned the part that reads the throttle position and it went straight up to 5 volts (100%) and when I released it it went back down to around .8 volts (5% or so)

so it seemed fine when it wasn't bolted on the throttle body...

just for shits I had a spare TPS that I put on and it did the exact same thing...

seems like the TPS is fine when it's not bolted in place but as soon as I mount in on the throttle body it doesn't read correctly.

any and all help with this is greatly apreciated.thanks guys!

When your shit pile was in my garage for 90000 months last winter I was effing with your TPS because I couldn't get a good raw value with dsmlink. IIRC you want it at 32 at idle.

I know that at idle you want the raw to be at 32....but how do you explain the readings that i'm getting...? why would the values be good when its not bolted on and then bad when i bolt it on?

what reading are you getting? When ever I set my tps to show the values for the tps, I just tighten up the top bolt and check it from there. It takes me a couple of tries to get it right. Sometimes I would unhook the throttle cable and check the reading from there. One thing I know is that there can be a small range where you could set it and it will read fine but, I know you don't want it to be set below a certain value. I always thought it was 28 but, you want it set to 32 at idle.

the thing is, no matter where I position the TPS while it's bolted on the throttle body the readings are WAY off...but when I unbolt it (but its still pluged in) the readings/voltage is good if i turn it by hand it seems...

i dont know what your reading it with but im having sorta the same or maybe not even the same problem, but my TPS just cycles. i can see it on my S-AFC like if i hold the throttle at 19% it will cycle between 29% and go down to 9% then cycle back up. its causing my car to buck and hesitate. i know its something with the TPS. because when i unhook it. the car will run fine. anybody might know what this is.

PROBLEM SOLVED.

it turns out someone wired a new plug into the factory harness and had the +5v sensor power wire and the IPS switch wire swapped.

i switched them around and everything is perfect now. 32 raw at idle and everything is peachy.

For future reference from the FSM:

2G 4G63T TPS
1 - Green/Yellow (+5v Sensor Power)
2 - Brown/Red (TPS output voltage)
3 - Yellow/Red (IPS switch)
4 - Black (Ground)

1G 4G63T TPS
1 - Green/Red (+5v Sensor Power)
2 - Green/White (TPS output voltage)
3 - NC
4 - Green/Black (Ground)

(thanks Steve .)
