Okay I havn't done the timing belt on my car since I got it, was probably over 60k ago, I'm not sure how long ago it was done so I took of the cover to check on the belt just to see if it was cracking or whatnot. Anyway this sucks LOL. So I'm probably going to get the timing belt kit from prostreet and get it changed.

Do yourself a huge favor and ditch that jalopy. Its just going to be a huge money pit of repairs and in the end you'll end up with a really really slow car. Sell the car and get a turbo model.

There is a chunk of the belt missing. Get it changed and I would not drive it anywhere until you do!

Yeah that's what I'm thinking, however no go on the turbo model, I got this car before I had kids, now the wife "insists" on something 4 door, and anything that is fast and 4 doors is probably out of my price range, so looks like I'll probably be getting something cheap, but I don't even have the money for something cheap right now so I might have to fix this or drive it until it goes kaboom(I really don't want to do this)

Mitsubishi Galant VR-4
Dodge Spirit R/T
Ford Taurus SHO

I'm racking my brain with other fast four doors, but those three are at the top of my list of affordable rides, hard to find, but can be had for under $5k for one in good condition.

btw, you like REALLY need to change that t-belt before your motor goes ka-blooey.

I had the thought of a Galant VR-4 simply to stay in the DSM family :)

Not to mention a 92-99 BMW 3 series (E36), or even an first Gen M3 (E30). A good 325i can be found for under 5K

Am I the blind one here or is there a big chunk missing from the belt

And NOT GOOD! :thumbdown

Yep I hate to ditch the ol' girl, but I think her time as come. ah well

Just for an update for you guys, The belt broke about 2 weeks ago, it was so sad I was stopped at a light and the car just died with some nice grinding metal sound. Oh well, I ended up getting a ZX2, not what I wanted definatly not but it was cheap so heck with it.

LOL I just finished reading all the posts in the thread. I got a good laugh out of it. I was like WHAT THE #### are these guys blind? Big ass chunk missing out of the belt and most everyone like looks good to me :p

If it died at a stoplight it was prolly fine. I've seen many belts break with the car moving a normal cruising speeds not get damaged.

You've seen a DSM do this? From what I've always been told it is a interference engine so when the belt breaks the pistons contact the valves and bend them.

4G63 engines have an inteference design. That means that an open valve will occupy the same space that a piston does at top dead center. That means when a timing belt snaps, there will be a valve left open. That means that a piston will smash into the valve, ruining your day. Whetever timing belts that you've seen break were not from engines that have an inteference design. That's why we always stress changing your timing belt at it's 60,000 mile interval.

id do belt an tensioner its only 150 or so which is only a fraction of what you would pay if the belt jumped. and my vow to myself is that im gonna do mine every 45-50k. my friend as a 91 awd talon and it jumped when the car had 58k on it. that sucked cost him alot of money.

4 door cars are so lame...for the life of me I cannot understand why manufacturers are trying to merge the whole sedan and sports car thing togther...why not just keep the sports car a sports car and save some weight with a compact 2 door coupe design? I dunno...
