Well, today I got bored and since my car is down for the winter. I decided to take the exhaust manifold off to check and see what real shape it is in along with the exhaust turbine housing. Well I have to say it was kind of a PITA. But with the help of www.vfaq.com it didn't take to long. I took some pictures of what I found.

In the first picture you can see a very noticable crack in the exhaust manifold.
The second picture you can clearly see a huge arse crack running all the way down into the turbine housing.
And the last is a pic of the far right(looking into the engine bay) exhaust runner in the head. Covered in oil. . I believe this is for piston #4? Or am I backwards? I know there is an order to them and it's in the repair manual. But it's outside and I'm in shorts and it's cold out. .

[Edit] Sorry for the blurry pics. . Digi cam is very sensative and only 2.1 mega pixels

The piston closest to the timing belt is your #1 piston. Is that the only one that is covered in oil? The 1g manifold is prone to cracking, they made the 2g ones out of a different material that is less succeptable to cracking. I'd suggest upgrading to that somewhere down the line. Can you see the crack in the turbine housing from the inside? I'd say its ok for now, but it will continue to get worse over time. You can have them repaired, but the best way to fix it is to replace it.

I too took mine off last week. The runner all the way on the right is the #1 runner (not #4). Mine was a little funky too. I didnt have oil on mine, but the gasket all around it was deteriating (sp?) causing a small exhaust leak. I checked mine over very carefully looking for cracks and I found none. I just sent mine to SBR yesterday to have a Tial WG mounted to it.....

If I were you, I'd pick up a used 2G manifold off of eBay or the classifieds, to replace your cracked one. Those cracks are only gonna get worse.....

My bad on the piston #. And it is the only one covered in oil. Any ideas?

Anyways. No I cannot see the crack outside the turbine housing. But the pic doesn't really show just how big this crack is. To blurry.

I plan on upgrading to a SBR cast mani or a 2g manifold. Obviously a used 2g is going to be cheaper. So I think I'll just do that. Also I need a new housing so I need to look for a new on of those or buy a bigger one.

3 points, 1 if the manifold is cracked replace it. 2 the turbine housing will slowly get worse but can be used intil you can afford a new EVO turbine housing. They have a new design that helps inhibit cracking. 3 If that is the #4 exhaust part that is where the EGR vents exhaust back into the intake and you can expect some extra blacking on both sides of the head. If not #4 look for valve guide seals or other wear.
