I'm working on my buddy's 1g. 93 Tsi awd, automatic with 390cc injectors and a 14b turbo. Fresh 7 bolt. Car is fouling plugs and drowning the cylinders in fuel.

So far I have replaced

Cas
Transistor pack
Coil pack
Replaced maf with 2g maf
Swapped fuel rails (had 2g in)
Injectors (had 450cc in)
Fuel pressure regulator (had 2g in)
Spark plugs
Coolant temp sensors

Timing is dead on (triple checked) ignition timing is on.

I can get the car to run if I blow off the spark plugs with an air hose, once car gets slightly warm, I hit the throttle and it dies, either that or I shut it off and try to start it.again and it just cranks and spark plugs are fouled. What regulates the amount of fuel going into the motor? I'm at a loss here..
 
Hmm...So doing all these changes to a ecu that setup for auto 1g and no tuning to match the switches in parts like logger or fuel controller?...
 
The ecu is a 5 speed ecu

That's good to know but still doesn't help out with control or logging of what is actually going on.Sure I have seen people swap 450cc injectors with a 2g maf doesn't mean it is a plug and play and what I mean by that is if your injectors and fpr and everything you swapped over is good then dialing in those settings to the ecu is what is needed, also recirculating to the maf right?
 
Indont see swapping 450cc injecotrs and a 2g maf being the problem, as it did the same thing with 390cc injectors as well as 450cc and a 1g maf. Intake system is sstock, so its recirculated. The car ran great yesterday with no issues. Today, it went back to only starting when the car is cold and the plugs are blown off with an air gun. As soon as the car is shut off it won't start back up. When its running it idles great and sounds great. I don't own a 1g so i dont have a logger or anything of use to tune with. I ruled out the return line being clogged, because it does the same thing when having a hose routed to a gas can. For some reason its getting too much fuel on startup. Nherron, that's not the o2 plug, the o2 plug is round and it's connected. I don't own a 1g so i dont have a car to look at to see what's connected to what
 
log and tune baby that's my guess, you got dial in those injectors I am assuming.But just trying to help so don't hate to much.
 
I know it may be a pain in the ass, but you should check resistance of certain sensor at the ECU-end of the wiring. A coolant temp sensor can be good, but it doesn't mean the wiring automatically is fine.

I really don't believe the ECU matters. Only the injectors and FPR need to match. The 390s use a 42.7 psi regulator. The 450s use a 36.3 psi regulator. They come out to be roughly the same in flow, so I believe the ECUs between auto and manual are not tuned any differently (remember, injector flow is rated at 3 bar, or 43.5 psi, with gasoline).

The first and main thing I would do is to stop throwing on random, and also 2G parts onto the car expecting results. Match the ECU, injectors, and FPR, then troubleshoot. Unless you're keeping some giant flow chart there on the wall, so you can keep track of every part and the results, you're just creating one giant, infinite cluster F-word and you will never track down a problem this way. Any solution you find will be pure luck.
 
The 2nd plug actually looks like the plug for the trans solenoid. and the first one looks like the kick down servo plug. I would have to look at mine a bit later to be sure, but I know for a fact that the plug for your fans is the exact same plug that they use for the trans shift solenoids. And the second one looks to me like another trans related line.

Stop changing everything at once tho. Start swapping 1 thing at a time, and log the results. Its the only way to actually diagnose the problem. You said there is a manual ECU and an auto trans in the car?
 
Give me about an hour or so to get pix off my car so u can see where my auto is plugged into for those 2. What color wires are they on the suspected trans plug? Should be 4 wires. So if I'm in there I can find the wires and plug u need.

Do u have any sort of data logging on this car???? The ecu can only compensate for so much...? Also how do you know that the car hasn't just fried what you fixed? You mentioned it ran fine now its running like crap again so what happened in-between when it was running fine and like crap? Have you checked all the things u repaired to make sure they are good?
 
02 sensor not working will not cause car to foul plugs. I have driven my with an upstream sensor that didn't work and only had high rpm problems which weren't that bad. And my plugs never fouled out. I'm running NGKs as well. And its hard to see in the picture but one of those plugs look like a knock sensor plug. Do you have a knock sensor on it? Is it plugged up? My plugs never fouled out but when I first swapped my engine out of the wreck into my current car it ran like junk due to I didn't have a knock sensor on the engine. Though i never had a problem with that in the car I wrecked though it could have been tuned out. That other car had been messed with and seems to have been someones race project idk. Knock sensor when sensing knock adds extra fuel to prevent pre-detonation so make sure your knock sensor is plugged up and working.
Edit: Also I've never seen a bad coolant sensor foul out plugs like that. As far as my experience I've only ever seen it ruin gas mileage as it would read a constant negative 40 degrees. And the 02 sensors can only change the fuel trim so far and if it quits working the car will run in a constant open loop state. I know ### when mine was bad that's how my car was. I used a snap-on verus scanner which second to latest model scanner and my car ran constant open loop and got bad gas mileage and minor performance issues. Never had it foul my plugs out.
 
Big plug im almost 100% is the shift solenoid plug. The smaller one I cant see on mine. Looks like ECU temp or dash cluster temp sensor plug. Atleast in the location it is in. That looks to be right by the trans lines out of the top of an auto in that pic. If your ECU temp sensor is not hooked up, I would think u would have all kinds of problems

Is this first picture the TPS plug? Hard to tell but it looks like the TPS plug, although I own a bunch of 90's and can't remember if the TPS plug is different from 91+ but I believe it is.
 
Knock sensor, o2 sensor, coolant sensors are all hooked up... not 100% sure about coolant sensors though, because there's so many on 1gs. The rad fan is hooked up so that eliminates that....and the coolant sensor and gauge sensor are hooked up. Where does the shift solenoid plug into?
 
And your not getting any knock sensor code right? And I've run my 2g before without the coolant sensor plugged up and never had a plug fouling problem. So I don't see it being a coolant sensor problem which I would think if it wasn't working it would throw a code. Not sure though with it being a 1g. Though on an auto with the tranny plug of it will just throw it into a limp mode. Locking it into third i believe. Unless (assuming you drove it when it ran good that one day) you had shifting problems or the tranny going to limp mode i don't believe that is a tranny plug. Only autos i've messed with were 420a cars So can't say where the shift solenoid plugs in at.

I was just thinking that it was an ecu problem due to you running a 450cc setup on a 390cc tuned ecu. But as you have tried both 450cc setup and 390cc setups with no change I don't see the saying that that is the problem. I swapped 560cc injectors off my evo engine into my 2g once just for the hell of it and yes I got excessive fuel delivery and could only drive the car under light throttle and low boost. I had no idle problems though and never fouled out my plugs and it always started right up. And when I swapped back to stock injectors everything went back to normal. I find it hard to tell you that its an ecu injector compatibility problem seeing as you have tried both fuel setups. Though that does not completely rule out an internal ecu fault with the injector driver circuits. Have you verified that you do not have a vacuum leak? Hence got it to sit and idle and sprayed gasket areas with starting fluid, brake cleaner, carb cleaner and had no change in rpms? Really starting to run out of things to try. Besides swapping the ecu with another. I'm pretty sure the ecu plugs are diff with 1g and 2g so i doubt you can try your 2g ecu in it. But maybe get one out of a junkyard to try though make sure they will allow you to return it if it doesn't solve the problem. If you can find one that is. And are you saying that your turbo was bad and you replaced it last week with a known good turbo and now that turbo also is ruined within a week of not even driving it??

Orange blue and yellow wires coming out of the top of the plug? If so its the solenoid plug. As u can see here it plugs in directly next to the trans mount on the pass side near the frame rail. I have 2 plugs in that pic as I had a wire break on one, so I put in a different plug as a temp fix.

Fear, the CC box on this is near the firewall behind the intake for a 91. Why would the CC plug be all the way over by the MAF?

Under the battery could simply be an AC switch or ABS. Neither would cause a bad running condition. TPS and CAS both have different plugs than the pic in the first shot. The fan plug would not be anywhere near that location either, it was just a reference as to what a trans solenoid plug looks like. Infact the 2nd plug on my pic was the chassis side of my ac fan plug. Plugged right up to repair the broken wire as a short term fix.

Have you tested the ECU temp sensor? Verify its not stuck or anything like that? Reason being is that if its constantly reading open or closed, you could get added fuel to compensate for a cold condition and cause that flooding. Just because its plugged in, doesnt mean its functioning. Ohm it out and check specs. Also, you said those things were all plugged in, but have you verified that they are plugged into the correct thing?
