Tips on head rebuild

I'm looking for some ideas or recommendations on what parts to rebuild my head with. It's a 6-bolt bare head, and I'm taking it to the machine shop soon to get looked over.

I don't want to overdo it and spend too much on the head. I've already put way too much into the short block. I want something that will spool the turbo quickly and rev fairly high.

All I have planned for it right now is a mild delta cam regrind and having it ported by my old professor since it will be fairly cheap. Anything anyone can throw at it would be great.

My build right now is:

Manley H beams
Mahle 9.5:1 static 85.5mm
Stock crank
Bs delete
ACL rod, main bearings
ARP rod,main,head bolts
Rotating assembly balanced to 1g
560cc injectors
Big 16g
Greddy cat-back
Hks ssqv
Fidanza lightweight flywheel
Exedy 3 puck
190lph pump
Dsmlink v3 lite

Delta hks 272 grinds or if your getting a larger turbo, kelford 272 grind.

Manley single valve springs and retainers, 3g lifters and thats it. Should be enough for a good amount of power.

Haha you're telling me 272's are a mild grind? I'm wanting something smoother to dd.

I'm sticking with the 16g.

Cams, valves, springs, retainers, guides. Is there anything else that I have missed?

my budget is ~$500. I have the money for what it takes, I just don't want to drop a bunch of money into the head if it isn't needed.

Uhh most 272s are mild. HKS 272 are very mild.

Damn, well i'm looking at videos of 272's. HKS seem great yeah. Some seem pretty rough though.

They only sound lopey if the idle is low. Other then that they idle almost like stock, but pull hard up top. Definitly do both 272 intake and exhaust.

I'm pretty interested in the 272's now. I'm reading mixed information on getting the 264/272 over 272/272 though. I don't plan on ever changing the turbo out but it is a big 16g rather than a small one. I'm thinking I'd get more out of the 272's but I'm still looking for some specs or dyno pulls.

Correct me if I'm wrong. But wont 264 Intake/ 272 Exhaust spool the 16g sooner than 272's? I would rather have across the board a longer rev range with average power being as high as possible than to rev higher with peak power at ~7k.

6 bolt head. slightly ported and gasket matched. viton stem seals. The engnbldr stock size valves. Evo IX springs and retainers. delta hks 272 regrinds.

Still have to get an angle job done before putting everything togther.

Are those used or new evo spring? There are records of people testing evo springs, 30+ of them and only 4 were good:

In addition evo springs have been proven to be only slightly better than stock, dependng on how you look at it. Spring and retainer are lighter than stock DSM and they have a better with larger ramp rate due to the beehive design, but are weaker than DSM springs.

If you are looking for budget springs for the 272 I would go with Manleys, you can use your stock retainers.

I was only looking for a stock replacement, theres no reason for me to go overboard with my springs right now.

They were tested at MAP and said they were all good. I have not tested them all myself.

Same money as the used EVO springs you can get NEW BC1100 springs and run stock retainers

Wow Bogus you're right. I didn't realize this. I'll look into these.

Do you know the difference between the evo springs and crower 1100s? I wanted to stay light with everything. I will probably use the BCs and evo retainers.

For your build the BC1100 springs and DSM stock retainers will be fine, the Evo retainers will be too small any how.

Do you mean the retainers will be too light, or they are physically too small to fit on the springs?
