tips on driving with a non-synchronized 2nd gear?

like everyone else, my 2nd gear synchro now ceases to function at all. taking the tranny out is not an option at this point, so i get to reap the badass reward of driving around grinding all over the place.

double clutching takes time, even though im skilled at it now. the latest method ive tried that seems to work pretty well is just slamming in to 2nd so that the fork doesnt have enough time to grind all over the ####in place and it just makes that son of a bi*** input shaft turn right. im guessing this is not very wise, but i'd say the force i use to put it in 2nd is equal to that which i use in every gear when i am racing. will the fork hold up better when doing this? i cant imagine grinding can be very good for it...
 
I just replaced the tranny in my GST because when I bought it it used to grind into third every time, going up or down. One day I was racing this kid and when I grabbed third thats where it stayed. It didnt make any kind of noise or unusual clunk or anything. But it would'nt shift out of that gear. I ended up going to the junk yard for $350 + tax I got a 126k tranny. All was fine until I dumped the car into a bit of water (probably incured a bit of lateral physical shock) and now it does the same thing that you and alot of other people are having problems with. My answer to your question, the shift fork is not that stong and will break. As was my experience. Sorry :thumbdown
 
Try to match revs before pushing it into gear. It's a little slower that way, but if you do it right it should slip right into gear.
 
basic rpm shift. let rpm in first gear get a little high, pull back on stick(do not press clutch in)it should pop out of first, let rpm fall a little try to put into 2nd. if done right it should just pop out of first and slide into second. Takes practice
 
double clutch. thats the way it was done back in the day when there were no syncros.
 
Double clutching is the only way to go in your situation with out damaging it more... I had the same occur to my 2G, I decided to just slam it in to 2nd everytime (it would grind every time) and before long I had no second gear, when the 2nd gear ring was taken out all of the teeth were rounded off... It was not pretty....:barf:
 
just shift from 1st to 3rd. i drove around for a couple months without 3rd or 4th gears, merging on the highway was the only place where things got interesting.

Even double clutching does not work. I havent been driving mine lately, the water pump went out and I have to do the timing set too. So hopefully she be running again next week. Then Ill need to address this tranny thing.:(

That's what I had to do for a while as well, I never lost 3rd or 4th tho. OMG
