Hey guys.. I've been doing some snooping and thoiught i'd let you in on what I found for cheap yet very effective big brakes.

Go to autozone, they are starting to stock some nice cross drilled rotors. Buy a pair of the drilled rotors for a 01 Mustang Cobra. The lug pattern, spacing and all other specs are identical! They are 13" and $50/ea.. Use the calipers and pads from a 01 Mustang GT. Dual Piston and fit the rotors nicely - $100/pair (about $40 for good ceramic pads). Then, all you need to do is custom make some brackets for the calipers.

Viola! $240+ tax and you have some great big brakes!! Then, you can just but some drilled rotor replacements for the rear with some ceramic pads and you've got yourself a nice braking car!!

Just thought I'd share the info. I'm planning on getting it done here in a couple weeks!!

Sounds like a decent plan except for the fact that your "brackets" have to be PERFECT and made out of a material that will not flex. Good luck though, I am interested to see how it works out.

Since it requires 17" wheels to clear the rotors, get a Cobra spare wheel while your at it. The tire is a bit too tall but the spare from an 04 Subaru STi, Bridgestone 135-70-17 is the right diameter. Saves you from changing two tires if you get a front flat.

This is interesting - let us know how it turns out.

Seems weird to me that if it was this simple to get a brake upgrade people would be doing it more. The EVOs in particular come with great brakes - so why don't we see any DSMers swapping to that. I even seem to recall RRE trying to get rid of some Evo V brakes a while back - but they wouldn't fit on a DSM, or so they said. The Evos use the same bolt pattern etc, just like the Mustang...

i have the same setup on my car 90 AWD.... it works great!! you have to run a 17" wheel with enough clearance however, and you'll have to find different brake lines to adapt to those calipers.

Some enterprising person should make a kit with the brackets for us non-fabricators :)

My friend just got the cobra fronts with calipers installed on his mustang gt. Those rotors are beefy.

Thanks. I found the baer kits. Nice price(even though it is not under 300 :D )

What have you guys done for the rear brakes?

one more thing that you guys should consider is that the center hole on the rotor is a little bit larger than the center on the hub on the eclipse. on top of that the lugs on a mustang are a little bit larger also. Which will result in the rotor having a little slop. With the baer kit they provide a centering ring to eliminate that slop. Anyway, hope that helps. For you DIY people, i will try and get some time to pull my brakes apart so i can get to that caliper spacer. I will make some measurements so you guys can make your own spacers..... no guarantee on when i can do it, but when i do get around to it, i'll try and get the specs posted.

For that price might as well get Vr4 3000gt calipers and rotors. Fab some brackets and you'll have the nice MITSUBISHI written accross the caliper :thumb: That'll look nice behind a 17inch wheel

And better yet just use the spindals from the 3000gt, they are identical on the 93-94
models.
I'm having a little trouble finding a 16" wheel that will clear these massive 12.5inch rotors though.

Neh, it appears that no matter what if you want to run the VR4 brakes you'll need a custom mounting bracket and most likely a wheel spacer of some sort. :(

Also, the later model 1Gs already have a 2piston caliper up front. I'm sure the stang brakes might be a slight improvement but it's still only a dual piston design, would that even be worth it?

Smart question.
Not about the piston qty, but rather the package; piston area, rotor diameter and pad. Just because it's got more pistons doesn't make it better. And in the case of two vs two they are both floaters as well.

Ah I should've worded that better... It just seems like for the buck you could just do good pads, slotted rotors, dot5 fluid, and ss lines for a lot cheaper than the whole stang brakes which seem to offer a negligible difference other than a larger rotor?

I mean obviously if the 2 pistons are larger and the rotor is larger it will affect the overall performance, but enough to offset the cost?

Have you ever seen them? They're huge! They work extremely well at stopping a car that weighs 600 pounds more than ours.

will that make it a bolt in affair? no brackets needed?

Yes I want to know also who does your brackets for this? Is it prtty hard to do or anybody with some good knowledge of aluminum can do it?
A few guys on DSM Canada are running thoses kit. Not much info...

Anybody tried to use those rotors for the Baer kit, at 50 bucks each it would be a lot less than going every time with those 250$ Eraspeed.

I read that the axle is too big on the vr4 gt and vr4 stealth.
in the link below the first post in the forum has a link to buy the brackets for 150 a set. 1gs, non turbo stealth and nonturbo 3000gts have the same hub assembly, so someone fabed brackets to put the vr4 calipers on a nonturbo gt and sl. so if they will fit on non turbo stealths and gts they will fit on 1g dsms
