Timming mark cam gear removal

Ok so here is my question, I need to replace my CAS and my head is off the car...I need to pull off the intake cam gear to get to the CAS off. So I'm wondering if there is a dummy notch so that the cam gear can only go back on one way, or do I have to some how make sure that the timming mark on the gear is exactly were it was when I took it off...Oh yeah if it matters it is a 96 TSI. There should be a little dowel pin on your camshaft that goes through a hole on your cam gear. There is only one way to put them on. I've never worked on a 95-96 intake cam...I know its different than all other 4g63 cam gears, but I would assume they still have the dowel pin. Check it first.
