timing question (dowel pins)

ok guys so my problem is that i bought a motor from someone and it did not have the timing belt on. So as Im getting to getting everything in time and checking all the marks i realize that my exhaust cam dowel pin is facing up while my other one is facing down. How can i fix this?

Both dowel pins should be straight up and the mark on the cam gears pointing at each other at 3 and 9 oclock. Is the intake cam 180 degrees out? do u have any pictures

Remove the cam caps, flip cam so that pin is up, replace cam caps.

im not exactly sure about what the cam caps are.. Are they the ones that hold the cam down?
I am replacing the cams anyways so i guess that when i do that i can take care of that?

That would be the easiest to do.

Once the old cams are out measure from the valve seat to the valve tip and make sure they are all the same height (so your sure none are bent). The turn the crank to TDC and install the new cams with the dowel pins at 12 o'clock.
